The Darien Board of Education has appointed of Dr. Eric Byrne, currently superintendent of Rye City School District, as the interim superintendent of Darien schools, starting July 1.
Byrne will lead the district for the 2025-2026 school year while the board searches for a permanent superintendent.

A Hillside Road resident reported the theft of a 2022 Ford Bronco to police at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12. But the owner turned out to be lucky that morning.
Charlotte A. Pacelli (Char/Gramz/Nana), passed away on March 10, following a lengthy battle with advanced dementia. She was 85.
Darien TV79, the town’s government and community television station, has just added a new feature: “In Memoriam”, a weekly show honoring Darien residents who have recently passed away.
Barkurios Buissereth of Stamford passed away peacefully on March 12. He was 64.
Doris E. Herbert passed away peacefully March 5, 2025, at the age of 95.

Burglars targeted two vehicles in separate incidents in town last week — one on Tuesday on the Post Road, the other on Saturday on Hecker Avenue, Darien police said. Nothing was taken from either vehicle.
In the Saturday incident, the thieves seem to have tried to get the car open with technology designed to subvert a “digital key” — an app on a smartphone that’s used instead of a key fob on some cars. “Digital key” technology is relatively new, and thieves have sometimes been able to get it to open car doors.
The Darien Community Association (DCA) is working with Harvard Business School Community Partners to see if any changes should be made at the DCA Thrift Shop, the DCA announced.
To guide the effort, the DCA and the consultants will gather community input through a survey, data analysis and focus groups.
Celebrate the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a lively performance of Irish ballads and sea songs by The Kerry Boys band, starting at 4 p.m., Saturday at Darien Library.
Blanford Tiemann Smith, known as Toby throughout his life, died of a stroke on Feb. 18, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. He was 78.
“It’s been the job of a lifetime,” says Catherine Rinaldi, Metro-North’s first female president, who is set to retire at the end of the month.
“It’s been just such an honor and a privilege to be able to lead this amazing organization… these heroes who performed the daily miracle [of running 700 trains] every day.”
Miracle? Hardly. But with such an aging infrastructure and so many moving parts, I’ve got to give Metro-North (and Ms. Rinaldi) credit for a job well done.

Darien police last week arrested a 27-year-old Brooklyn, New York man after an investigation with several other departments looking into counterfeit bills being used at multiple stores, including several at the Old Kings Market shopping plaza in Darien.
The United Church of Rowayton will soon start offering yoga classes, accessible for all levels and “donation-based” instead of a fee. Registration is not required — just show up.

William (Billy) Ray Marquet Jr., a longtime Darien resident and resident of Stamford, passed away on Jan. 21, 2025 in Stamford. He was 60.
Nicholas P. Augustus, Sr. of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and former resident of Darien passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 19. He was 96.
