Douglas Campbell III obit obituary

Douglas Campbell III, 72, passed away on Sept. 3. A memorial service and reception will take place Sept. 26 in Darien.

Doug was passionate about the DLT and believed strongly in our potential to protect land for future generations.

Jay Shutts, former DLT president, recalls their tenure together.

“Doug served on our Board in the late 1990s, a pivotal moment in our history. At the time, DLT had not yet engaged in major fundraising efforts. However, when the opportunity arose to purchase what is now Mather Meadows from the McPherson family, Doug helped lead a transformational conversation about the future of our organization.

He called a meeting of key stakeholders, including board members, interested residents, and then-First Selectman Fred Sammis to discuss how DLT could raise the necessary funds to preserve the property.

The discussion was not easy, but Doug’s thoughtful leadership encouraged honest debate and ultimately inspired the board to embrace a more active role in land preservation.”

Doug’s vision and courage helped set DLT on the path we follow today. We are profoundly grateful for his leadership and the lasting impact he had on our mission.

A memorial service and reception for Doug will be held on Friday, Sept. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Noroton Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to ALS United Connecticut or the Darien Land Trust.
