Michael Ziegler, 94, Loved History and Jazz, Enjoyed Gardening, Active in United Church of Rowayton

Michael S. Ziegler, of Darien, passed away on May 8, 2025 at the age of 94. All who knew Michael will remember his big personality, great sense of humor, and love of history and jazz music. Michael’s life was marked by his service in the U.S. Army, an education at Ohio’s Wilmington College, and a career in advertising, throughout which he made lifelong friends. Upon having their daughters Elizabeth and Margaret, he and wife Joanne settled in Darien where, well into his 80s, he could be found working in the garden and remodeling his infamous stone walls. Michael was a devoted member of the United Church of Rowayton since 1964, serving on and chairing several committees and becoming an original member of the caregiving ministry.

Sandra Lovegrove, a longtime Darien resident, passed away surrounded by family on May 1, 2025. She was 88. She was born in Jamaica, Queens on April 17, 1937, to James Libby Littlefield and Edna (Berggren) Littlefield. Sandra was raised in Floral Park, New York, went to Sewanhaka High School and summered in York Beach, Maine. As a teenager she worked at The Goldenrod in York Beach, tending the soda fountain and selling boxes of their famous candies.

Genevieve “Jean” Metayer, of Darien passed away on April 28, 2025 at the age of 95. A resident of Darien for 65 years and a beloved teacher in the Darien school system, Jean’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and the students she taught. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on Dec. 19, 1929, to the late Michael D. Mainelli and Etta Ferrante, Jean graduated from Rhode Island College of Education and later earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Bridgeport. Jean went on to have a distinguished teaching career, dedicating more than 20 years to the Darien Public Schools at Royle and Tokeneke Elementary Schools.

Joseph Bruce Magliari “Joe”, 82, passed away at home in Darien on Feb. 26, 2025. Joe was born in Stamford on October 31, 1942, son of the late Joseph and Margaret (DeCostanzo) Magliari. Joe proudly grew up on Stamford’s West Side and was a graduate of Stamford High School (‘60) then Wright Technical School (’61) and spent six years serving in the National Guard. After graduation Joe took to master his trade and became a well-respected barber in Wilton, retiring as owner/operator of Village Barber Shop in 2014 after 52 years.

Clelio M. Improta, Jr. “Clo”, age 89, of Osprey Florida, passed away March 8, after a long and valiant battle with kidney disease. Clo was born in Darien to the late Clelio M. Improta, Sr. and Elena (Frate) Improta. He attended Darien schools and graduated from Darien High School (Class of 1954), where he played varsity football. He later attended Michigan State University, where he met the love of his life and mother of his children, Ann K. (Krieg) Improta, recently celebrating 66 years of marriage. Following graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, Clo went on to serve in the U.S. Army.

Born June 21, 1928, in South China, Maine to George E. and Mary E. (Huston) Roberts, she was the second of three daughters. Her sisters, Mary Carolyn (Roberts) Chenowith and Helen Lane (Roberts) Moger, predeceased her. June graduated from the Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville, Maine and proceeded to Boston University to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in music education.

Marjolein Strikwerda McLachlin, mother, wife, sister, dancer, teacher, and beloved friend, passed away on Feb. 11, the morning of her 69th birthday. Born in Amsterdam to Peter and Sienie Strikwerda, after marrying her American husband Harry in 1985 she moved to and made her home in the U.S. for 40 years. Pursuing a career in education, she found her calling in the classroom and taught elementary school in Amsterdam; Evanston, Illinois; and finally for over 15 years at Pear Tree Point School in Darien. She brought creativity and care to her classes, and particularly enjoyed teaching social science units on ancient Rome, sharing the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas with her students, and learning about Montessori teaching methods.
