Marjolein McLachlin obit obituary

Marjolein McLachlin, 69, Animal Lover, Vegetarian, Environmentalist, Taught at Pear Tree Point School

Marjolein Strikwerda McLachlin, mother, wife, sister, dancer, teacher, and beloved friend, passed away on Feb. 11, the morning of her 69th birthday. Born in Amsterdam to Peter and Sienie Strikwerda, after marrying her American husband Harry in 1985 she moved to and made her home in the U.S. for 40 years. Pursuing a career in education, she found her calling in the classroom and taught elementary school in Amsterdam; Evanston, Illinois; and finally for over 15 years at Pear Tree Point School in Darien. She brought creativity and care to her classes, and particularly enjoyed teaching social science units on ancient Rome, sharing the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas with her students, and learning about Montessori teaching methods.

Marshall A. Tharp of Sarasota, Florida died on Dec. 4, 2024. He was 95. He was the son of the late Carey E. Tharp and author Louise Hall Tharp of Darien. Marshall grew up in Darien, where he lived for over 50 years.

Peter Letchworth Hoyt, of Blue Hill, Maine a former longtime resident of Darien and Little Deer Isle, Maine, passed away peacefully on March 5. He was 92. Peter was born on Sept. 16, 1932, in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up with his parents, Stanis and Stephen Hoyt, in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1953, where he was an active member of the Sigma Phi fraternity.

Charlotte A. Pacelli (Char/Gramz/Nana), passed away on March 10, following a lengthy battle with advanced dementia. She was 85. She was born Nov. 11, 1939, in Newton, Massachusetts to the late Haven and Virginia (Hatch) Andrews, and grew up in Newton and Rochester, New Hampshire. She was married to her late husband, Gerald J. Pacelli ,for over 50 years and is also predeceased by her older sister, Patricia A. Richmond, and other relatives.

Barkurios Buissereth of Stamford passed away peacefully on March 12. He was 64. Barkurios, also known as Marcus by loved ones and friends, was born on April 16, 1960 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to parents Idomenee Medy and Paulette Buissereth. Marcus enjoyed being busy and held his own business tending to the Stamford, Darien, New Canaan and Greenwich community by applying his expertise in heating, plumbing and electrical work. He worked for Associated Waters Industry Inc. for 27 years where he perfected his craft in plumbing and heating and gained life long friendships.

Doris E. Herbert passed away peacefully March 5, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in Bloomfield, New Jersey, she was the daughter of George and Amelia Edgar. Her father was a pilot in the Royal Air Force of Scotland before moving to the U.S. after World War I.

Doris moved with her parents to Darien as a young girl — next door to her future husband, Henry F. Herbert. She graduated from Darien High School and attended the University of Connecticut. She later worked for a patent attorney in Manhattan.

Blanford Tiemann Smith, known as Toby throughout his life, died of a stroke on Feb. 18, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. He was 78. He was the son of Royall and Marie Smith, formerly of Darien. During the 1950s and 1960s Toby lived on Christie Hill Road.

Born March 27, 1928, in Stamford, he was the son of the late George Agosto and Josephine Calvi Agosto Verducci. He was just shy of his 97th birthday and remained living independently until his death.

He died on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025 at age 55. Known by several different monikers including Warren, Randy, Shafty, Rand, Uncle, and his favorite, “Dad,” Warren was an intelligent, eccentric, and darkly funny person.
