Water filters for pitchers, faucets or refrigerators are plastic and look like they belong in single stream recycling, but because of the filtering materials they contain, they do not. Always check with the manufacturer to see if they have a take-back program, but if they do not, put them them in the trash. ___________

Seventy-eight. That’s the number of old smoke alarms sent off for recycling since the collection bin was established in March of this year. Smoke alarms contain minute amounts of radioactivity and should not be thrown in household trash or put in with single stream recycling. Finally getting around to replacing that old air conditioner? Refrigeration equipment (freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers) can be recycled at the Darien Recycling Center. A $15 Freon-recovery fee is required – pay cash or check to the scale house attendant or at the Department of Public Works (DPW) office at Town Hall. __________

Darien: Gather Ye Household Hazardous Waste While Ye May: They’re Collecting This Saturday

The easiest time to get rid of your hazardous household waste in Darien is coming this Saturday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Noroton Railroad Station parking lot, so

You can also drop it off at nearby towns later (see the list below), but it won’t get any easier this year than when you can do it right here in town. If you’ve already got some household hazardous waste you’re itching to get rid of, put it aside this week and look for more. Household hazardous waste can be dangerous if some of the chemicals mix for whatever reason (for instance, if you misread a marred label or if something leaks). If you pour them down the drain or throw them out with regular garbage, they can be a hazard to the environment or to other people (or both). If a young child ingests them, the danger is obvious.

Recycling isn’t just about getting rid of stuff in the right way. If you want to reduce your “ecological footprint,” you can also take and use something that would have been thrown away, and you can do some of that at the Darien Recycling Center. Here are two ways:

Compost: Yours for the taking

Ever wonder what this large mound of “earth” is as you enter the the Darien Recycling Center? It is leaf compost, and if you’ve never used it, now is the perfect time to mix it in the soil around existing plantings, or while installing new ones. Leaf compost improves the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil — overall, an excellent soil conditioner!

Here’s what you should know about recycling batteries at the Darien Recycling Center — any kind of batteries:

(And the amount of batteries already recycled there, just from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 is pretty amazing.)

All types of batteries can be recycled at the Darien Recycling Center — no need to remember which ones can safely be disposed of with trash, which should be returned to retailers for recycling or which type should be saved for Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD). In FY-16, more than 5 tons of batteries were recycled through our facility! _____________
