New Canaan Police: Four From NYC, Ages 18 to 23, Found With Stolen Mail

New Canaan Police on Saturday arrested four New York City residents in the same minivan where police found 30 pieces of stolen mail, including checks worth $45,000. The four were stopped by police in a minivan on Jelliff Mill Road, close to the Darien border. In the van was mail from homes in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. Police: Weston Woman Caught Nearby After Shoplifting from CVS

A 40-year-old Weston woman was seen stealing items from CVS Pharmacy downtown, then was charged by police officers when they found her less than a block away, police said. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proved in court:

Police were called at 8:52 a.m., Friday, Feb. 25, from the pharmacy at 964 Post Road, and were given a description of the suspect. When they questioned the woman, she told officers that the items in her bag were from another CVS, although she didn’t have a receipt — but she then admitted that she had stolen the items from the CVS nearby. Police didn’t say what was stolen, but they charged her with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor for thefts of less than $500.

Gorham’s Pond Tide Gates Scheduled To Be Opened March 14 to 21, Unless it Rains a Lot

The Gorham’s Pond tide gates will be opened on two different days this month for flushing and cleaning, unless there’s “extensive rain […] or a series of very high tides,” or bad weather, Darien Public Works Department announced Tuesday. Unless either of those natural events prevent it, the gates will open on Monday, March 14 and close again on Monday, March 21. A large amount of rain or very high tides would cause too much water flowing over the dam to open or close the gates, the announcement said.

Two More Catalytic Converters Stolen from Vehicles in Darien Parking Lots

The two latest thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles in Darien parking lots took place over a six-day period last week. The first theft took place on Monday, Feb. 14 in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market at 150 Ledge Road. The victim told police he parked his vehicle there at 3 p.m. When he returned at 9:45 p.m., he noticed that the muffler was noisy. The second theft took place in one of the parking lots at the Darien Professional Building at the corner of Hecker Avenue and Noroton Avenue.

YWCA Darien/Norwalk Parent Awareness invites parents of 5th through 8th grade students to attend an upcoming program entitled The Positive Side of Social Media, a free event at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 9 at the Darien Depot. — an announcement from YWCA of Darien/Norwalk

The program will show how teens can use social media for good. In an age where we primarily focus on the negative aspects of social media, YWCA Parent Awareness has invited three Darien High School teens to come and speak about how they have successfully used social media to make a positive impact on our community. During the event, parents will learn from them how and why they made their decisions, and also learn from them about different decisions they would make now versus when they were in middle school. This small roundtable-style discussion, moderated by teen psychologist Dr. Tara Levinson, is designed to teach parents that social media, used properly, can be a powerful tool.
