2024 Stamp Out Hunger poster

Help get food to people in the Darien area by letting Post Office workers pick it up beside your mailbox May 11 in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The event, organized by Person to Person (P2P) and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), takes place on Saturday, May 11, and Darien residents will be receiving grocery bags from their letter carriers on Friday, May 3 to hold your food donations. You can also volunteer to help out.

Stamp Out Hunger food drive 2024Leave your food donations by your mailbox by 9 a.m. Your letter carrier and food drive volunteers will pick up and deliver your donation to P2P; or drop off your food donation to P2P Darien, 1864 Post Road, between 12 noon to 4 p.m.

This collaborative effort between all three P2P food pantries and local post offices makes it easy for residents of lower Fairfield County to help restock the P2P pantries.

Food insecurity continues to be a significant challenge in Connecticut, affecting approximately 13% of residents who struggle to access sufficient and nutritious food. This includes over 115,000 children who face hunger daily.

“Person to Person plays a crucial role in helping families access the food they need,” said Nancy Coughlin, CEO of Person to Person. “The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a key event that helps us keep our shelves stocked and meet the urgent needs of our neighbors. We hope that everyone in the community who can, will join us in making a difference by donating generously.”

Over the past year, P2P has distributed enough healthy groceries to provide nearly 2.7 million meals through its food pantries in Stamford, Norwalk, and Darien, and through its Door2Door home delivery program — a 14% increase over the previous year. Sustaining this level of service relies heavily on community support through both food and monetary donations.

“The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a key event that helps us keep our shelves stocked and meet the urgent needs of our neighbors,” Coughlin said. “With the support of Cuisinart and Conair, we can make an even larger impact. We hope that everyone in the community who can, will join us in making a difference by donating generously.”

Similar collections are being held in Norwalk, Stamford and Wilton on May 11.

“Working with P2P really shows what we can accomplish when we all pull together,” said Dominick Frattaroli, vice president of Branch 60 of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, and I love seeing the community support in action.”
