Just in time for flu season, there are various places you can go in and near town to get your flu shots without getting an appointment with your doctor. In addition to the scheduled Darien Health Department clinics mentioned here, you can schedule a flu shot at Walgreens, 148 Heights Road, here; or call CVS in Darien at 203-655-6335 to get your flu shot there. Two flu clinics are scheduled for today, Tuesday, Oct. 8 — one from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Darien Senior Center and another from 1 to 3 p.m. at Darien Library. No appointment is needed at either clinic. Dementia and Early Treatments for It: Presentation at Darien Senior Center

Dr. Allison McElhone, a geriatric specialist with Stamford Health Systems, will be presenting a program on dementia and its early treatments. A geriatric specialist is a physician who treats the elderly population and the conditions that most commonly affect them. These doctors have special training in the effects of aging on the body and mind of a patient. Geriatric specialists treat common ailments faced by senior citizens, such as frailty, incontinence, memory problems, arthritis, senility, decreased functioning and more. In addition, geriatric specialists keep abreast of the different medications that an elderly person is prescribed to treat their more complex health issues in order to decrease adverse side effects and avoid dangerous drug interactions.

Minimize Risks of Taking So Many Medications: Talk at Darien Senior Center

Diane Corba of CT Pharmacy will discuss potential drug-drug and drug-herbal interactions with certain medication regimen at Darien Senior Center  and she will present strategies to minimize these risks. Polypharmacy refers to the effects of taking multiple medications concurrently to manage coexisting health problems.

Currently, “44% of men and 57% of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week.” (Medscape.com)

Consumers and caregivers should remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from their home as quickly as possible to help reduce the chance that others accidentally take or intentionally misuse the unneeded medicine, and to help reduce drugs from entering the environment.
