Dave Pressler, Connecticut photographer, artist and designer, will talk about “Australia, All Over – Down Under” at the Darien Men’s Association on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017. His core message is “learning to look in order to see,” encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to become visually conscious of the world around them. Dave’s presentation reveals Australia’s dramatic land and water forms, wildlife, unique botanicals, ancient aboriginal rock art, creative architecture and some humorous items from contemporary culture. He is vice president of ART/PLACE Gallery in Fairfield and is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.
Art Gottlieb, a local historian on political and military history, will talk about the Korean War at the Darien Men’s Association (DMA), on Wednesday, Nov. 8. “Initially called a “police action” in response to North Korea’s invasion of South Korea, it became an undeclared military action, the first to be authorized by the United Nations,” said Art. “Often referred to as the “Forgotten War,” this still unresolved conflict saw the city of Seoul in South Korea change hands no less than four times before the signing of a contentious armistice in 1953,” he said. Art has served as curator at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York, where he worked extensively to create displays accurately illustrating the history of 20th century warfare.

(TWA), will talk to the Darien Men’s Association on Wednesday, Oct. 25 about his years with the airline from 1968 until his retirement in 1985. The New York Times described Ed as “a man who, above anything else, knows a thing or two about money and about running an airline.”
An event that left a significant impression on him was meeting Pope Paul II when TWA provided air service to the Pope during his visit to the United States in 1979. The title of his talk is “The Pope and Me.”

Greg Palmer, co-owner of Palmer’s Market, will talk about “Noroton Heights: Past, Present and Future” at the Darien Men’s Association meeting Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017. He also is president of the Noroton Heights Shopping Center, where he is spearheading its redevelopment. _________

According to Palmer, the design calls for the creation of a central town square between two structures. Retail, restaurant and office space will occupy the first floor, with residential apartments on the second floor.
Ute Wartenberg Kagan, executive director of the American Numismatic Society, will talk to the Darien Men’s Association (DMA), Wednesday, September 27, about the most valuable coin in the world, the 1933 $20 gold Double Eagle that sold for $7.6 million in 2002. Dr. Wartenberg Kagan says, “The bizarre and mysterious saga about the coin begins in 1933 with the Gold Confiscation Act and ends in 2017 at the U.S. Supreme Court. — This is an announcement from the Darien Men’s Association
“The intriguing tale includes alleged smuggling from the U.S. Mint, King Farouk of Egypt, shady coin dealers, government agents conducting a ‘sting operation’ and, of course, a few lawyers.”
Dr. Wartenberg Kagan was formerly curator of Greek coins in the British Museum in London. She has testified about coin design before the Senate Banking Committee and served on coin advisory committees for the Secretary of the Treasury. A man who attended the Juilliard Preparatory Division and plays the piano for pleasure, will give a talk Wednesday to the Darien Men’s Association about appreciating music. “Music is all about understanding how differing emotions are captured and exemplified,” said the speaker, George Ubogy, a retired physician. “The performer’s interpretation, the physics of musical sounds and the neurobiology of hearing are a part of enjoying music.”
Ubogy will play excerpts from Schubert, Wagner, Rossini and Brahms to illustrate his presentation. His talk will start at 10:45 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20.
