The Darien Community Association has announced that it’s awarding scholarships to 11 Darien High School seniors graduating this year. — information from a Darien Community Association announcement

This is the 83rd year that the DCA has granted scholarships, and the organization is the largest provider of scholarships to DHS graduates — with funding for both new and returning college students. The scholarship program is also the only one in Darien offering recipients the opportunity to reapply for all four years of college, the announcement said. “The DCA is proud to support Darien High School graduates and is grateful to our generous donors,” the announcement said. “We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!”

Darien High School students brought back three awards Saturday at the 2024 Technology Student Association (TSA) State Competition. — an announcement from Darien High School

This annual event was hosted at Killingly High School and serves as a platform
for students to present their skills across various STEM-related
events. Eight DHS students participated in the event. A particularly popular competition this year was the Dragster category, which requires students to design and build a CO2-powered dragster according to state specifications, with limited materials. This year, there was a special requirement to include horizontal wings in
the front and back.

It’s Time for a Later Starting Time for Darien High School

To the editor:

On Tuesday, April 9, the Board of Education will have a preliminary discussion of a healthy school start time. The reality is that the 7:40 a.m. DHS start time trails the national average of 8:04 a.m., as well as our peers in Greenwich, New Canaan, Westport, and Wilton, among others. These towns saw the science and took action to prioritize the health and well-being of their teens, some as many as 20 years ago. The 2023 Thriving Youth Darien survey highlights a significant need: 1 in 4 Darien high schoolers and 1 in 5 middle schoolers reported persistent sadness, hopelessness, and anxiety. A healthy school start time is a policy change that can help impact these sobering statistics – and offer other compelling benefits to our youth.

Darien High Students Win First Place at Cybersecurity Competition

One of two teams from Darien High School’s Programming Club won first place in a competition at the Cyberquest games on Saturday in Stratford. — an announcement from Darien High School

Competing against other high school teams from Connecticut and New York state, the “Blue Wave team” made up of Pasquale Hoffman, Reagan Little, Anoushka Muchhal and Nathan Camporeale won first place. The Blue Dot Wave team competed well, as first year participants. Aiden Younessian, Michael Lui, Brady Eldredge are on that team. (A “dot wave” is a thing.)

The  Saturday, March 24 event took place at Sikorsky in Stratford.

Darien Football Weightlifting Competition Raises Funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research

February 29th wasn’t just any workout day in the Darien High School weight room for the football team — 60 players arrived ready to compete in a weightlifting fundraiser for a cause, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). — an announcement from the organizers

JDRF is the leading global organization funding Type 1 diabetes research, an autoimmune disease affecting millions of children and adults for which presently there is no cure. This is the seventhth year that DHS Football has held a player weightlifting competition to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. For four years prior to that, they sponsored teams for the JDRF walk. The cause was selected because it’s close to home for the team, with both players and players’ relatives being affected by the disease.

This March, the students of Darien High School’s Theatre 308 will perform the hit Golden-Age musical Hello, Dolly! presenting a classic story filled with smiles, songs and plenty of love. — an announcement from Darien High School

The two-act musical portrays the story of the famous matchmaker, Mrs. Dolly Levi, as she attempts to marry the prominent Mr. Horace Vandergelder in hopes of sharing his money with the masses, the way her late husband had taught her. At the same time, Mrs. Levi excels in pairing the young widow, Mrs. Molloy, and her assistant Minnie Fay, with two of Vandergelder’s comedic secondaries: Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker. From the streets of Yonkers to the most captivating restaurant in New York City, Mrs. Dolly Levi leads the characters, as well as the audience, on an unforgettable adventure through New York at the turn of the twentieth century.

Seven DHS Seniors Earn Spots as Candidates for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

 Seven Darien High School seniors have been selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. These students have been recognized based on broad academic achievement and having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or ACT. — an announcement from Darien High School

 The seniors are Anna Gjervold, Pasquale Hoffman, Grace Liu, Annika Mengwall, Aadya Pai, Amanda Smith, and Sarah Williams.

The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by an executive order of the president, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Each year up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
