A 31-year-old man driving an SUV that was swerving over the double yellow line on Hoyt Street was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, and cocaine was found in the vehicle, police said. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

At about 2 a.m., a police officer saw a black 2005 Toyota 4runner swerving over the line on Hoyt Street south of Lynn Court. When the vehicle was pulled over, the officer could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from it, and the driver’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The driver, a resident of Mulberry Street in Stamford, told the officer that he’d had two drinks that night. The driver couldn’t correctly perform a sobriety field test and was arrested on a charge of driving while under the influence.

Police: Aroused by Strangers After Passing Out Behind Wheel of Her Running Car, Woman Drives Into Light Pole

A 33-year-old woman with a child in her car was found behind the wheel, passed out at the intersection of Tokeneke Road and Old Farm Road, police said. When she was aroused by witnesses, she immediately drove the SUV she was driving into a light pole, toppling it, police said. Police did not report that the woman, the child in the car or anyone else was injured in the incident, which happened just before police were called at 2:24 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, police said. A 30-year-old woman who had been driving while on drugs the day after Christmas was stopped by Darien police again on Jan. 5 after speeding and swerving between lanes on the Post Road, then charged with driving while under the influence, police said. In between her Darien arrests, she was arrested by Stamford police on shoplifting charges. The next day, after Darien police had released her on a bond, she was shot in the leg in Stamford, Darien police said. The Stamford Advocate reported that, according to Stamford police, a woman was recuperating in a hospital after she was shot Friday, Jan.

A 25-year-old Darien woman was charged with driving under the influence after a police officer saw her traveling fast on Riverside Avenue, pulled her car over and smelled alcohol, Westport police said. Westport police gave this further account (including accusations not proven in court):

At about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, the officer saw a gray Toyota being driven north at a high rate of speed. When the car was stopped and the officer spoke with the driver, the officer saw that her eyes were glassed over and she talked slowly and with slurred speech. She was given field sobriety tests and couldn’t complete them, so she was charged with driving while under the influence. At the police station, a breath test showed her blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit.

A 39-year-old driver, later charged with driving while under the influence, was found parked at a gas station last Tuesday, Dec. 20, with a front tire shredded and which had been rolling on its rim, police said. Police responded to a report of an intoxicated driver at 4:15 p.m. and went to the Noroton Citgo at 1927 Post Road. Police were told the car had entered the gas station at a high rate of speed from Garden City Road, a side street, and that driver had tried to pay for gas using his car keys. The driver, a Hillside, N.J. man, at first had difficulty lowering the front window.

A Darien woman was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol after she was seen drifting back and forth between lanes and then stopped for 10 seconds at a yellow flashing light on the Post Road, police said. Just before midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 6, a police officer saw a Jeep Wrangler being driven west on the Post Road just east of its intersection with Hecker Avenue. The vehicle drifted from the left lane to the right and back again. Then it stopped for the light at the corner of the Post Road and Hecker Avenue, although the light was flashing yellow — not steady red, steady yellow or flashing red. No one needs to stop for flashing yellow lights.

Neither a 60-year-old Darien man driving on Mansfield Avenue around midnight on Dec. 10 to 11 nor his female passenger received any major injuries after he hit a utility pole, police said. At about 6 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, Darien police were called to a lawn in front of a business at 120 Tokeneke Road, where a white BMW was parked and a state police trooper was already on the scene. A 48-year-old woman who couldn’t pass a field sobriety test was charged with driving while under the influence, although she couldn’t or wouldn’t submit to a urine test and police did not request a breath test, Darien police said. According to the police report, she said she had a small amount of alcohol earlier the night she was arrested. Police found a potent liquid with the active ingredient of marijuana on her and the strong odor of marijuana when they spoke with her. But with no tests done, they don’t know what substance caused her to be unable to complete the field sobriety test. A 61-year-old man was intoxicated at about 5:15 p.m., Sunday, when he backed his car into another vehicle, damaging it, and then drove away, Darien police said. Darien police described the incident with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At 5:15 p.m., police were called by the owner of the parked car, who said the other vehicle, a 2002 Audi S8, drove away. The victim followed the Audi to a parking lot at 157 Rowayton Ave. in Rowayton, about a mile away, and Darien police went there. The Audi driver, who lives on Shorefront Drive in Norwalk, was still sitting in his car and the engine was running when police arrived.

A Darien police officer driving on Interstate 95 spotted a car driving as slow as 45 mph and then as fast as 75, changing lanes without signaling and swerving within the lane, so the car was pulled over, police said. The officer was driving on the northbound side of the highway at 2:47 a.m. when the car, a 2013 Dodge Dart, was seen as it approached the Darien North rest stop. The officer activated emergency lights and had the car pull over. The driver was directed to park in the lot at the rest stop.

DUI Charge for Darien Man, 21, After Crash Ejects One Passenger, Injures Another

A 21-year-old Pleasant Street man was arrested Friday on charges of intoxicated and reckless driving after an Aug. 20 crash in which two of his passengers were injured, including one ejected from the vehicle, police said. The driver, James Reilly of 21 Pleasant St., was taken to a hospital along with the two passengers, and Darien police began investigating the accident. As part of the investigation, police used a search warrant to get Reilly’s medical records, which showed that his blood-alcohol content was higher than the 0.08 legal limit. Police then applied for and eventually received an arrest warrant charging Reilly with DUI, reckless driving, making an improper turn and two counts of second-degree assault with a motor vehicle.
