Ralph W. Smith, 92, of Southbury, died Feb. 28, 2016 in River Glen Healthcare. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Elizabeth Waterbury Smith.

Ralph Smith, 92, died Feb. 28. Visiting hours and a memorial service were held Wednesday.

He was born Aug. 25, 1923 in New Canaan to the late Charles G. and Annie Simon Smith.

Ralph lived in New Canaan, Darien, Norwalk, and most recently Southbury. He served in the US Army 6th regiment, 32nd infantry during the Korean War.

An active 32nd degree Mason for almost 75 years, he served as Master of Harmony Lodge No. 67, New Canaan in 1957, and as district deputy to the Grand Lodge of Connecticut in 1975. Memberships included VFW No. 3933 in Darien, the Monker Grotto, Royal Patrons of Friendly Court No. 23, Ischoda Yacht Club in Norwalk and the Rippowam Family Campers.

He enjoyed dancing at the Norwalk and Rocking Rooster Square dance clubs and sharing his thespian talents at variety shows in Connecticut and his snowbird home in Venice, Fla. He retired from Belcher’s Inc. in New Canaan after over 30 years of service.

He was predeceased by a wife of 20 years, Alida Wilson Smith, of Norwalk; brother, C. Gordon Smith of New Canaan; half-brother, Raymond Smith of Kent.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his wife of 30 years, Elizabeth Waterbury Smith of Southbury; his son, Dan W. Smith and wife, Tina, of Plymouth, Wisc.; daughter, Laurie A. Freshwater and husband, John of Swansboro, N.C.; step-daughter, Wendy Campbell Calabrese and husband, Joseph of Oxford; step-son, Scott D. Campbell and wife, Mary of Chesterfield, Mo.; step-son, Peter S. Campbell and wife, Cindy of Beacon Falls; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to greet the family on Wed., March 2, from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. at Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall St., Norwalk.
