Darien police suspect an officer on patrol recently spotted the thief who stole items from CVS Pharmacy after the suspect allegedly returned weeks later to the scene of the crime.

And then, police say, the man entered a nearby bar/restaurant — where several officers happened to be eating and at least three of them saw he looked like the suspected thief in the store surveillance video.

Thomas Byron, 50, a resident of the Gardens at Summerfield in Shelton, wasn’t charged with the theft, although he remains a suspect, but police at Darien Social took him into custody, and he was later arrested after police determined he was wanted on arrest warrants from Fairfield and Stratford police. The bond on each warrant is $25,000.

Police say an officer in a patrol car spotted Byron at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the store entrance, but Byron soon left, and the officer didn’t catch up with him. If Byron was trying to get away from police, he went to exactly the wrong spot downtown that night when he entered nearby Darien Social.

On May 30, according to news reports (including this one from the Darien Times), a man was seen on surveillance video putting Red Bull and 5-Hour energy drinks into two shopping bags and walking out of the store with them. An investigation is continuing, but an arrest warrant would be needed to charge him at this point, police said.
