Another Quick Recycling Tip in our series:

This year’s winter has been milder than last year’s (so far!), but wet, heavy, snow still takes a toll on trees and other landscaping. Downed branches like these can be recycled at our facility along with other yard waste. Not sure where to take them? Recycling Tip: What to Do with Household Batteries

Another Quick Recycling Tip:

A battery is a battery is a battery, right? Wrong. Common household batteries include alkaline, nickel cadmium, lithium ion, nickel metal hydride, small sealed lead acid, silver oxide and zinc-air. Most people don’t know the difference, or what to do with them when they’re used up. In Darien there is no need to: BRING ALL HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES TO THE DARIEN RECYCLING CENTER, where they will be properly disposed of or recycled — look for the blue barrels inside the transfer station building.

WANTED – USABLE OR UNUSABLE TEXTILES

There’s no telling how much snow will be dumped on our region this weekend, but one thing is for sure: this is a great time of year to clean out closets and drawers! But before that single sock or ripped t-shirt is tossed in the trash, check out the sign over the USAGAIN BINS at the Darien Recycling Center — many of those “unusable” textiles can be recycled! — This announcement comes from the Darien Recycling Center pages on Facebook. Like that page on Facebook and you can get your tips directly, as soon as they come out, and keep informed on other recycling information.

Recycling Tip: Getting Rid of Unwanted Photos

Another Quick Recycling Tip in our series:

THE SKINNY ON PHOTOS

We all have them, right? Boxes and boxes of old photos that were either not good enough or too plentiful to fill albums.

If it’s time to say good-bye to some of them, should they be trashed or recycled? The answer is: both! Older photos developed using chemicals should be thrown away (or reused in craft projects); digital photos do not require chemicals and can be recycled in single stream. If Your Recyclables Are Picked Up, You Can Still Use the Recycling Center

If you get your recycling picked up by a hauler, it only costs $40 for as many as two permit stickers for your cars allowing you to visit the Darien Transfer Station/Recycling Center, where you can recycle a lot more than at curbside, according to the Darien Reycling Center. Here’s their announcement on Facebook:

One New Year’s Resolution that is easy to keep is to recycle more! If you use a local carter to haul away trash and single stream, know that there is much more that can be recycled at the Darien Recycling Center: motor oil, scrap metal, tires, oversized plastics, electronics, textiles, paint, batteries, lightbulbs and yard waste. Wreath Recycling

Quick Recycling Tip: Don’t Recycle Christmas Wreaths

The latest Quick Recycling Tip in the series:

The Department of Public Works (DPW) has released its annual Christmas tree pick-up schedule with an important reminder not to put wreaths out with trees. Bows and other artificial decorations can easily be removed, but most wreaths are not compostable due to the copious amounts of wire used to hold them together. Many are also flocked (sprayed with paint or glitter). It is therefore recommended that wreaths be disposed of with trash. Here’s the schedule and other reminders about DPW pickups of Christmas trees by the street in front of your home.

5.62 Tons of Mattresses Recycled in Darien Since June: Recycling Committee

An announcement from the Darien Recycling Committee:

Recycling saves natural resources AND it saves taxpayers money! Since the Mattress Recycling Program began in mid-June, 5.62 tons of mattresses have been collected and removed — at no cost to Darien taxpayers. These mattresses would otherwise have been thrown in with municipal solid waste (MSW), for which the town pays roughly $91 a ton to have hauled away. That savings of just over $500 benefits every taxpayer in Darien!
