One of the most popular events of the year is back — Mini Golf in the Library! Join Darien Library in the indoor links as it welcomes golfers of all ages and degrees of putting perspicacity. — an announcement from Darien Library

The 18-hole miniature golf course will be set up throughout the building along with face painting and other activities. The cost to play is $5 per player — each player will also receive a free hot dog!  

All proceeds from Darien Library Mini Golf will go directly to the purchase of books, movies, and technology as well as the support of countless programming opportunities throughout the year.

The Choirs of Saint Luke’s Parish in Darien, and Christ Church in Greenwich will sing a service of Choral Evensong on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. at Saint Luke’s. The service will be the first joint effort between the two Episcopal parishes in recent memory. When Ken Skovron, longtime co-proprietor of Darien Cheese & Fine Foods in Goodwives Shopping Center, says the cheeses from Parish Hill Creamery are not only delicious but “absolutely amazing,” you don’t have to take his word for it. You can decide for yourself at a free cheese tasting from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, when the Vermont cheesemakers themselves, Peter and Rachel Dixon, will visit Ken and Tori Skovron’s store. The tasting will also include seasonal smoked charcuterie and apple and pear ciders to pair with the cheeses. “Peter is an icon in the cheese industry for his approach to the craft and his passion,” Ken Skovron said.

Get More Mileage Out of Your Halloween Costume at the Abilis Annual Walk/5K Run Sunday

You can walk or you can run the 5K course at the Abilis annual fundraising event in Greenwich this weekend, and you can do it in costume. There are family-friendly activities and food available at the Annual Walk/Run for Abilis at Greenwich Point Park (Tod’s Point) in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, on Sunday, Oct. 15. The event is attended by people of all ages and abilities. There will be a Kid’s Activity tent with arts & crafts and face-painting, a bouncy castle, a “Bubble Bus” and a fire truck that children and parents can explore!  The activities begin at 9 a.m. with the start of the 5K run and continues with the walk at 11 a.m.

Participants are also encouraged to wear team t-shirts or dress in costumes (prizes provided for most creative outfits).

The Tokeneke Pumpkin Carnival, a 50-year Darien tradition for kids, returns Saturday, Oct. 14 at the school on Old Farm Road, with rides, food and some spooky fun for children both big and small. Collections Taking Place for Wreath Laying at Veterans Graves

Various local groups supporting veterans will be accepting contributions this weekend and next to pay for this year’s laying of wreaths Dec. 16 at the graves of some of Darien’s veterans. The ceremony, associated with Wreaths Across America, will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 16 in Darien’s Spring Grove Veterans Cemetery. Last year, wreaths covered all 2,184 graves in the veterans’ section of Spring Grove.

Singer/songwriter Melina Bruhn will perform live with her traditional German Oompah band starting at 6 p.m. at the North Lawn and Grand Steps of the park at 1010 Washington Blvd. in downtown Stamford. Tree Conservancy of Darien, along with local non-profits Darien Nature Center, Darien Land Trust and Friends of Selleck’s Woods are co-hosting a Shinrin-Yoku walk, open to the community, with Certified Nature and Forest Therapy guide, Jeffrey Wyant. The Oct. 14 walk is complimentary and fulfills one of Tree Conservancy’s goals to educate the community about the value of trees and their care. The walk is limited to 18 people, and reservations are required a tthe Tree Conservancy of Darien website. Shinrin-yoku, which developed in the 1980s in Japan, is translated into English as “forest bathing”.

Stamford Symphony Orchestra’s “Maestro 2017-2018 Season” begins Saturday, Oct. 14 with a pre-concert gala and opening weekend conducted by the first of five finalist conductors who will take the podium this season. Darien native and local artist Peter Saverine will be showing and selling his latest paintings as well as autographed copies of his children’s book, Jenny’s Pennies—A Nantucket Tradition this Saturday and Sunday at the Fairfield Kiwanis Club’s 26th Annual Juried Arts and Crafts Show. Saverine paints scenes inspired by his life along coastal Fairfield County. Sometimes it’s a Wednesday evening ride by the beach when the youth sailing regatta is winding up before sunset. Other times it’s looking out at Greens Ledge Lighthouse from a Roton Point vantage or walking by Darien’s Rings End bridge.  

His color blending and simple subject matter has been called, “relaxing, happy, and nostalgic of summer days gone past.” Some of his work is on a smaller scale, which helps make it affordable for many rooms in a home or office.

Performing Arts Join the Artists at Grove Street Plaza on Saturday

Art will stand and sit on display Saturday for the annual show at Grove Street Plaza, but it will also dance and be heard. Ballet from Go Figure will be performed at noon (and give away grip socks while supplies last), followed by a 1 p.m. performance from a certified instructor from Club Pilates, which is opening soon in the former location of Panera Bread. (They’ll be giving away bottled water to visitors while supplies last.)

These are the latest additions to the performance schedule at the Darien arts festival, which features painters, photographers and other artists displaying their work, along with food for sale and, it appears, sunshine and temperatures getting up to 83 degrees (get that bottled water). “My goal is creating a free art event which everybody can come and enjoy,” said Darien artist Nobuku “Nobu” Miki, who organized the annual show. “I got live string music, flower arrangement show, magician, kids art show, kids French lesson from a native, and now I’ve added performance art.
