With Columbus Day closings on Monday, Oct. 12 at Darien Public Schools, Pear Tree Point School, Five Mile River Nursery School and Darien Nature Center, here are some things to do with the kids in Darien or not too far away:

NEW ITEM:  Author Visit: Sarah Albee, Fashion Through the Ages

Using plenty of props and famous works of art as examples, the author of Summer Reading pick Why’d They Wear That?! will share the lighter side of fashion and history as she explains why people wore some of those crazy clothes. You’ll get the inside scoop on what people wore (or didn’t wear) for underwear, deadly dyes, kids in corsets, how knights used the bathroom, and more–and you’ll never be bored at a museum again!Ages 8 and up; from 3 to 4 p.m.

Stepping Stones Museum for Children: “Global Energy: The Musical”

“Global Energy – The Musical addresses complex scientific issues on energy and conservation, presenting them in a whimsical way to our future leaders: the ten and under set. Based on stories, poems and songs by children from the United States, the Kingdom of Jordan and Rwanda; put to music by acclaimed singer songwriter Tina deVaron; and performed by Child’s Play Touring Theatre. Stamford Museum and Nature Center

Monday, October 12, 11 a.m. to  3 p.m.

“Celebrate our newest exhibition, ReDress: Upcycled Style by Nancy Judd, and the coming of another fall season, as we explore the cycles of nature. Meet live animals to learn how they get ready for winter and how they’ll be ready to greet the spring. See how designer Nancy Judd uses recycled materials to create fashion, and make your own great recycled jewelry and crafts to take home. Venture onto the farm to search for wheels and circles on our farm machines and in our barns. Take our zip line for a spin too! At 2:30 p.m., join us around the fire circle for a chance to make some S’mores.” Members: Free | Non-Members: Free with gate admission.

Pump It Up in Norwalk

From 10:30 to noon, play and get pizza, bubbles, games and more. $14 per child (adults free).

Tumble Jungle in Norwalk

“In addition to weekly themed activities your children will spend time developing motor skills, bouncing in our inflatables room, riding on our zip line, making their own ice cream, and jumping into our huge foam cube pit! […] Camp starts at 9:00am. The kids partake in 2 hours of themed camp activities including games, learning experiences, and entertainment from special guests! The kids also enjoy a bonus hour of recreational gymnastics, sports, and play! Please pack a snack (peanut free), a drink, and most importantly get ready to smile!”

Bruce Museum in Greenwich

School vacation workshop: Painting en Plein Air: 10 a.m. to noon. “Spend the day off from school creating a unique work of art or craft! Workshops are designed for grades K-5 and explore the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. Members $7.00 and $20.00 for non-members. Advanced registration is required: educationreservations@brucemuseum.org

Sam Bridge Garden Center — Greenwich

Free hayrides (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), scarecrow making (any time from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., $35 — “We supply the frame (adult or child size), head, stuffing, face pieces and a place to make a mess. You supply plants and a long sleeve shirt. Then use your imagination, bring a hat, gloves, scarf, belt, jewelry. The possibilities are endless! Be creative, there will be a prize for best scarecrow!”) and pumpkin painting ($7 — any time from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

Plasko Family Farm — Trumbull

The farm has a corn maze and hayrides (we don’t see anything on their website about apple picking or pumpkin picking)

Silverman’s Farm — Easton

Pick apples anytime from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., daily. 451 Sport Hill Road, Easton (directions)

Blue Jay Orchards — Bethel

Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Columbus Day. Pick your own apples and pick your own pumpkins.

Jones Family Farm — Shelton

“Open daily  10 am to 5:30 pm, at our Pumpkinseed Hill Farm, 120 Beardsley Road, Shelton. Join us for pumpkins and fall fun.”

Warrup’s Farm — Redding

“This year, we’ve grown an incredible crop of pumpkins, winter squash and gourds, in all sizes, shapes and colors, along with Indian Corn and fall vegetables. You can pick pumpkins from the field or choose them by the farm stand.”

Outhouse Orchards — North Salem, N.Y.

Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., $5 parking and $25 for a half-bushel bag of apples. Apple Season is Here and pumpkins are also available. There’s also a corn maze.
