Homes in Different Parts of Town Found Burglarized, Ransacked — Almost $100K Stolen

Within 16 hours late last week, Darien police were called to the scenes of two separate burglaries of homes in town where the residents were away for extended periods. Police found the second floor of each home ransacked, and the owners later reported men’s and women’s jewelry and other items missing — $50,570 from one of the homes, on Saint Nicholas Road, and $47,090 from the other, on Tokeneke Trail. Home Burglar Alarm Activates, Police Arrive, Live Video Surveils — But Burglars Escape

Four burglars climbed into a second-floor window of a home on a private road early Friday evening, activating an alarm that alerted police, who arrived at the scene — too late. Here’s what police said happened:

Police received a communication about a burglar alarm at a home on Horseshoe Road, a private road at the north end of town. The time police gave for the incident was 6:27 p.m.

As police arrived at the scene (they didn’t say when), the homeowners, on vacation since Oct. 16, told police they had seen video from a remote camera feed showing four individuals climbing up to a second-floor window and entering the house. Police at the scene found out a little later was that the homeowners had also seen the four burglars leave through the same window.

Jewelry, Perhaps Other Items Taken from Searles Road Home While Owner Away

Sometime in the two weeks before Halloween, a home on Searles Road in Tokeneke was broken into and jewelry was stolen while residents were away for an extended period, Darien police were told. Police gave this account of what happened:

A caretaker who was checking the property about once every two weeks while the owners were in Florida told police at 8:46 a.m. on Oct. 31 that the home had been entered. She hadn’t been to the house since Oct. 17 when she pulled into the driveway Halloween morning and saw the front door ajar.

House Burglarized on Old Farm Road Sometime From Sunday to Tuesday, Aug 11 to 13

A homeowner arrived at his Old Farm Road house at 11 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13 and found a closet door that had been closed was left open and, when going to his bedroom, found all of his dresser drawers open. At 11:03 p.m., he called police to report a burglary. When officers arrived, they saw a broken window pane at the entry door, which looked like the way the burglar got in. Police found the owner in his bedroom and they searched the house.
