Still have a bag from last weekend’s food drive? You can take it to the Post Office this week or to Person-to-Person at or 1864 Post Road. They could really use it after the rain depressed regular donations by 20 percent. Here’s a letter from P2P’s director:

To the Editor,

What a rainy Saturday! Despite a constant rainfall throughout the day hundreds of volunteers from Stamford, Darien, Norwalk, New Canaan, Westport, Weston, and Wilton came to Person-to-Person to help with the National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive.

Leave a Bag of Groceries at Your Mailbox Saturday, for Letter Carriers’ P2P Food Drive

Darien residents are encouraged to leave a bag of groceries at their mailbox on Saturday morning, May 13. With 9 percent of Fairfield County households living below the poverty level — and another 23 percent struggling to afford the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter — hunger and food insecurity is an issue for many of our neighbors. Since 1992, Person-to-Person has been the designated recipient of grocery donations collected in Darien during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. Person-to-Person Darien Site Manager Aidan Wildes notes that the number of people living in poverty plus those who earn less than the basic cost of living in the communities we serve are significant — 16 percent of Darien households, 14 percent of New Canaan households and 35 percent of Stamford households. “Each week, the Darien Food Pantry provides more than 65 families with enough food to prepare three meals a day for seven days.”

The selection of non-perishables and canned goods includes foods high in nutritional value, many of which are donated by members of the community.

Person-to-Person Will Accept Clothing Donations Again Starting Tuesday, Jan 17

A full week earlier than anticipated, effective Tuesday, Jan. 17 the Person-to-Person Clothing Center in Darien is once again accepting donations of seasonally-appropriate clothing, footwear and outerwear as well as small household items.

According to P2P Director of Volunteers Janet King, numerous volunteers have worked tirelessly over the past week to inventory, sort and display donations received through the end of 2016. “We had expected this process to take the better part of three weeks,” King said. “However, P2P volunteers are so hard-working and efficient that they were able to complete this project in record time.”

King is not only thankful for the efforts of the volunteers, she also appreciates the understanding of all those who held their donations during this period. ___________
