DPW Chief: Natural Gas Project 40% Complete, But Repaving Those Roads Waits Till 2020

About 40 percent of the Yankee Gas natural gas expansion project in Darien is complete, town Public Works Director Edward Gentile says, and service should be turned on soon as far east as the Noroton Heights Fire Station, but roads will continue to have temporary paving patches until sometime after July 1, 2020. Repaving the roads will wait in order to give time for residents along the gas-main routes to decide whether or not they want to hook up to gas service, Gentile told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday. “We have an 18-month ‘sabbatical,’ if you will, for paving the roads to allow them [Yankee Gas, a subsidiary of Eversource] to tie in new customers, so it won’t be done the next budget cycle [2019-2020]. It will get done the following one [2020-2021] — so 2020,” he said. “Their temporary [paving] restoration right now has to be pristine, because I need to hold on to it for a while, so they’ll be going back and cutting some of the stuff [pavement] now and fixing it,” he said.

Natural Gas Expansion Into Darien Could Have Direct and Indirect Benefits — If You’re Along the Route

Homeowners along the four-mile route where Eversource is installing natural gas mains this summer and (possibly) fall can get a big discount on hookups, and then lower energy bills that would make back the initial investment of new equipment costs after 10 to 12 years, utility officials say. But there’s a bigger, indirect gain for every homeowner who switches from heating oil or propane to natural gas, and it’s not just utility officials who say so. That can come with higher home resale values, which by themselves could pay for the installation, aside from any utility-bill savings. The big financial gain for the 200 or so homeowners with property along the gas main routes could come when they sell their home, because homebuyers often pay more for homes heated by natural gas, according to some experts not affiliated with the industry. According to a 2012 study by a real estate business in the (colder) Boston area, natural gas in homes increased their sales value by $11 per square foot, or $22,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home (more information below).

Tonight, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., April 19, Eversource has a “Gas Expansion Open House” for anyone interested in getting natural gas service — especially from any of the new gas lines planned for installation this year in Darien. The open house takes place at the Mather Community Center, 2 Renshaw Road. Use the lower parking lot off of Renshaw Road for the easiest access. Natural gas service is less expensive than warming a home or other building with heating oil or electricity. Money, time and effort must be spent to make the switch, and Eversource has various programs to help with financing.
