Halloween Safety Tips & Reminders from Darien Police

In order to assist our community in enjoying this fun-filled holiday as safely as possible, the Darien Police Department has compiled the following Halloween safety tips for children, parents, motorists, and homeowners:

Tips for a Safe Halloween

PARENTS
• Always escort your children and carry a flashlight. • Be familiar with the neighborhood where your children will be trick-or-treating. • Set a specific time for your child/children to be out. • Always know who is trick-or-treating with your children. • Walk on the sidewalks and not in the middle of the street.

Trunk or Treat for Kids this Halloween

Join in Trunk or Treat, a free, annual family event: Bring candy, kids in costumes and even decorated cars to the Noroton Presbyterian Church’s newly paved/designed parking lot on Oct. 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be free goodie bags for all children. Click here for more information. Fill your trunk with treats, decorate it (if you so wish), bring the kids and go trick or treating from car to car.  No crossing streets, long dark driveways and LOTS of fun!  All we ask is to keep the costumes and decorations appropriate and not scary.  Questions?  Contact Liz at 203-309-5619 or liz.morelli@norotonchurch.org. “Trunk or Treat” had its inaugural date after Hurricane Sandy downed Darien’s power wires so severely that “Halloween Trick or Treating” in Darien was cancelled.

Halloween 2015 Forest Shark

Reports Surface of Deadly ‘Forest Shark’ in Fairfield County

Right before children go out at night for Halloween, reports have surfaced of the deadly “Forest Shark” in Fairfield County, and the Maritime Aquarium has posted a video of two sightings, although the organization isn’t vouching for their veracity. “Thought I’d share this link with you as we study these two new videos’ authenticity,” aquarium spokesman David Sigworth said in an email to the area news media. “Since we’re just a few days away from having kids going out at night for Halloween, it may be worth a warning to your readers.” Folks, we report, you decide — do you need to watch out for this land monster these dark Fall nights? Here’s the video.

It’s the Halloween Season, with events planned for a week before the holiday itself. Here’s a list to help you keep it all straight. We’ve included two “Rocky Horror Picture Show” events for much older kids (the film is rated R and has, ah, a very adult theme.)

[UPDATE: At the bottom of this list is a list of safety tips published (pretty early) by Norwalk Police on Facebook.]

[Correction: The children’s Storytime event at Darien Library takes place Thursday, not Tuesday.]

Most events are in Darien (we’ve added some extra events, sometimes very much like the events in Darien, in case you’ve got a schedule conflict):

ONGOING

Halloween Hayride — Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk — 3 to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends — “Prior to picking the perfect pumpkin, families can hop on Stew’s Halloween Hayride Spectacular which features entertaining displays created by Stew Leonard’s team members. Rocky Horror

Do the Time Warp Again at “‘Rocky Horror’ Experience” Saturday at Maritime Aquarium

An announcement from the Maritime Aquarium:

Hot patootie, bless my soul, you’ll have twice as much fun when you dress up and take part in “The ‘Rocky Horror’ Experience” on Sat., Oct. 24 at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. That’s because a live cast will act out the story of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on a stage in the theater while the campy cult-classic film plays on the giant screen above. “Nowhere else can you see ‘Rocky Horror’ playing on a screen that’s six stories tall, with live characters acting out the film right in front of you too,” said Aquarium publicist Dave Sigworth. “We’re sure that The Maritime Aquarium is the best place to do the time warp again this Halloween season.”

Audience members are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters, and to bring such appropriate items as rubber gloves, newspapers, umbrellas, flashlights and party horns.

Darien Youth Commission

Here’s the announcement on the Web page of the Darien Youth Commission:

THE 18TH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN WINDOW PAINTING CONTEST IS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24! Open to students in grades 6 – 12, this community-wide event is a favorite for all.  Registration is ongoing (window assignments will be made on a first-come/first-served basis).
