‘Love & Mercy’ — Friday Night Feature

Friday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 and 8:45 p.m – Love & Mercy- (2014) Starring Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, Brett Davern, Graham Rogers, John Cusack, Paul Giamatti; Rated P-13; 120 minutes

Bill Pohlad’s Love & Mercy, a biopic of Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson, focuses on two distinct periods in the songwriter’s life. One timeline follows Wilson (played as a younger man by Paul Dano) as he quits performing live in order to focus on the creation of the album Pet Sounds, the single “Good Vibrations,” and the eventually discarded album Smile. During this period of intense work, Wilson’s mental-health issues grow worse. The other section of the film features John Cusack as an older Wilson, as he attempts to escape the influence of a manipulative doctor (Paul Giamatti) who has become a totalitarian guru to him.

Join Boogie Chillun’ on a musical journey through the rich history of the United States.  Each song will be given a brief introduction describing the song itself, the artist, and its contribution to American music. Boogie Chillun’ will encourage students to keep music alive through sing-alongs and interactive playing. Ages K and up

Wednesday Matinee – ‘My Favorite Year’

Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 1:30 p.m. –  My Favorite Year (1982) Starring Peter O’Toole, Mark Linn-Baker, Jessica Harper, Joseph Bologna, Bill Macy, Lainie Kazan; Rated PG; 92minutes; Presented with captions for the hearing impaired. Mark Linn-Baker stars as Benjy Stone, junior writer on the popular 1950s TV comedy/variety series The King Kaiser Show. Kaiser (Joseph Bologna)’s guest star this week is Hollywood matinee idol Alan Swann (Peter O’Toole), a swashbuckling Errol Flynn type, right down to his indiscriminate womanizing and fondness for mass quantities of booze. Stone is assigned to keep the actor out of trouble during rehearsals and deliver him sober to the performance.

Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him.  When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person. Fall Semester MedEd: Surgery in the 21st Century

 

Program Director, Josh Herbert, MD, Darien Library, Stamford Hospital, YWCA Darien Norwalk, and the Darien YMCA, cordially invite the public to attend this five week series of lectures that mimic the structure of the medical school experience. Each night will focus on one topic and cover the anatomy, function, common disease states, and available treatments. The physicians are board certified in their area of speciality and leaders in their fields. Dr. Joey Papa will discuss the history of surgery, components of training for surgeons, and recent advances in the field.

Legal liability issues confront entrepreneurs at all stages of the business life cycle from inception to exit. This workshop offers practical and timely guidelines relevant to business owners, managers, executives and investors on ways to manage legal liability risk. This workshop will provide an introduction to:

• How insurance can protect you or not protect you
• Using contracts effectively to minimize liability
• Business-related torts including negligence, product liability and defamation
• When litigation or arbitration becomes necessary

About the presenter

Gary Hirsch is a business lawyer who specializes in advising high-growth, privately-held companies on matters ranging from contracts, partnerships and IP, to venture funding, corporate governance and acquisitions.  He has practiced law for over 20 years, including long tenures with a major firm in New York, a Fortune 500 law department, and two successful technology companies, where he ran the legal functions and led his last company through an IPO.  Since starting his own business in 2012, Gary has provided his general counsel services to over 50 private companies, including start-ups in New York and Connecticut. He’s also served as a SCORE counselor to numerous local businesses.
