Seniors, Disabled People Can Get on Darien Human Services Dept List for Calls Before Storms, Town Emergencies

The staff of Darien Human Services keeps a list of seniors and disabled individuals to contact prior to a storm or town-wide emergency to provide reassurance and peace of mind, and they’ll add seniors and the disabled to the list — just ask them. Staff will also inform residents of resources available in the community such as Emergency Shelters and Cooling Centers. If you are a Darien resident and would like to have your name added to the Emergency Call List, please call Human Services at 203-656-7328. — an announcement from the Darien Department of Human Services. Darien Human Services annual Back-to-School Supplies Drive will run from July 15 through Aug. 30. — an announcement from the Darien Human Services Department

The Back-to-School Program helps eligible Darien school children get off to a good start with backpacks, school supplies and gift cards for shoes or sneakers. Human Services is in particular need of new, large backpacks in blue or black which can be purchased at Costco or any major retailer. Gift cards to Walmart and Kohl’s are also greatly appreciated.

I wanted to thank you and the Darien Old Timers Athletic Association for your very generous donation of $1,500 to Darien Human Services. Our entire department is extremely grateful to the Old Timers for their ongoing support. With your help, we have been able to provide important social services to meet the needs of Darien residents over the years. Letter: Thanks to Everyone Who Donated to the Human Services Household Goods Drive

To the editor:

On behalf of the Darien Human Services Department, I would like to thank everyone who donated items to our Household Goods Drive last month. In particular, I want to thank Jack Holly and Boy Scout Troop 35 for their overwhelming support. The boys of Troop 35 spent two weekends collecting household goods donations and delivered numerous bags of items to our closet last month. Many Darien residents are unaware that up to 5% of their neighbors live at or below the poverty level. Services are available in town to provide these families and individuals with food and clothing, but not everyday essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels, personal grooming and hygiene products, and cleaning supplies.

If you’re a senior citizen or disabled resident of Darien who rents, you may be eligible for a rebate from the the state government for the rent you paid in 2018. — an announcement from the Darien Human Services Department

The town Human Services Department will accept applications from Darien residents who meet the eligibility requirements and who apply for the rebates before Sept. 30, 2019. Eligibility requirements are:

1. Must be 65 years of age as of December 31, 2018 or disabled and collecting Social Security disability payments.
