Tonight’s the Night for Darien’s 2018 Fireworks Display: Some Reminders, Tips and a Timetable

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. tonight for Darien’s annual fireworks display at Darien High School. Expect the viewer area to be farther from the rockets’ red glare this year, but you’ll still see the bombs bursting in air. The stadium seating available most years is off limits tonight, with a construction project involving underground power lines making that area unavailable. There is an area on the far side of the school for those who want a little less bang (see the fuzzy map below, upper righthand corner). If you want to park your car on the high school campus, you’d better have a parking pass with you.

Darien Celebrates Independence Day with Fireworks at the High School

Hundreds of families turned out to see the town fireworks display Saturday night at Darien High School, either sitting almost directly underneath the rockets’ red glare near the stadium field or further back with children at the oval fields (or very far back at the opposite end of the campus where the booms were not nearly as loud). Food trucks vended food, face painting was offered, as were lighted rings, strings light sabers and other swords that were popular among kids. The Darien Community Band played patriotic music from the courtyard and passed along elsewhere on the school campus via the sound system. Darien High School Band Director Jon Graver conducted the community band.

The group has grown from as low as about seven members a few years ago until it’s now at 30 or 35 members (it depends on who’s in town when they’re playing over the summer).

Darien police have announced these safety and traffic rules for people attending — and especially driving to — the town fireworks display on Saturday, July 2. Some highlights: No vehicles can enter before 6:30 p.m.; No parking passes are available on the day of the event; no booze at the event; if you try to take down a no parking sign, you’ll be arrested; your bags, backpack or cooler may be searched; there are various ways you could park your car so that it will be towed, putting a definite crimp on your fun (see the announcement for that and for other rules). Here’s the announcement:
The following regulations will be in force the evening of Saturday, July 2, 2016 for the fireworks display at Darien High School (rain date Sunday, July 3). All parking in the high school lot will be with a pre-paid permit only.  This permit must be visible in the vehicle’s windshield when approaching the gate.  Parking permits can be purchased at the Darien Town Hall.  No permits will be sold at the Darien High School gate. All traffic will enter the high school grounds via Noroton Avenue.  Cars will be parked in a manner so that all vehicles will be facing away from the high school area to expedite traffic flow at the conclusion of the display.  No vehicles will be allowed to enter the high school property until 6:30 p.m.
Residents should be advised that there are a limited number of handicapped parking spaces available and a handicapped permit will be required to access the handicapped area.

UPDATE, July 3:

The weather looks fine for tonight’s fireworks at Darien High School, with the National Weather Service predicting partly cloudy skies and a light, 6 mph south wind. The overnight low should be 63 degrees, according to the weather service. If you don’t have parking passes already, it’s too late to buy any (they’re all sold out), but you can walk in to the high school campus for free. Parking is available less than a mile away at the Middlesex Middle School and McGuane Park lots until they fill up. Norwalk has its fireworks Friday night as well, at Calf Pasture Beach.
