Whole Foods supermarket management has decided it would welcome Darien Farmers Market if the vendors want to move there, and town officials will allow it. The CEO of the company that owns Goodwives Shopping Center, however, says his company would like to see the Farmers Market stay there. On Monday, the Darien Planning & Zoning Commission heard a request for a permit to allow the Farmers Market to move to the part of Whole Foods parking lot that’s closer to the Post Road. The commission granted approval in a unanimous vote. Commissioners said the new location didn’t seem likely to harm anyone — neighbors shouldn’t be affected, there seemed to be enough parking and the move wouldn’t take place unless Whole Foods and the vendors thought it was to their advantage.

Darien Human Services has just been designated as a Local Coordinating Agency for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). SFMNP provides vouchers for locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey to eligible low income seniors. Vouchers are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Vouchers are valid through Oct.

A proposal to move Darien Farmers Market to the parking lot of Whole Foods Market was put on the agenda for last week’s town Planning & Zoning Commission, but the item was removed because an agreement hasn’t been reached at this point, the commission was told. “They haven’t pulled it together yet,” Planning & Zoning Director Jeremy Ginsberg said of the farmer’s market organizers and Whole Foods. “It might be on a future agenda.” The Darien Farmers Market just opened in the Goodwives Shopping Center parking lot, where the market takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. “They have been talking about the possibility of moving,” Ginsberg told the commission.

Darien Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (a change from the previous 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) every Wednesday through Nov. 27 (the day before Thanksgiving) at the Goodwives Shopping Center parking lot, 25 Old Kings Hwy. North. Vegetables and fruit will be offered, of course, along with flowers, meat, bread, baked goods and more. The earlier you arrive, the better selection you’re likely to get.
