The annual benefit celebrates the organization’s life-changing health programs in more than 90 countries and the health workers and partners who make them happen. Americares supports more than 4,000 health centers worldwide with transformative health projects and donations of medicine, improving the health of millions of people in need every year. This year’s benefit will honor frontline health workers—the heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic—and take Americares supporters on a unique virtual journey to see the organization’s work in Colombia, Jordan, Liberia, Malawi, the Philippines and the United States.

Stamford-based Americares is providing “surge” medical support in Peruvian health facilities overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The health-focused relief and development organization is dispatching medical personnel, all of which are locally based and have experience working within the health system, to health centers in Lambayeque, Lima and Piura to meet the increase in demand for care and provide the struggling health system with some relief as the coronavirus pushes health center capacity to the brink.

Darien native Tim Bosek, a longtime volunteer with Americares and chairman of its Junior Council, has joined the organization’s Board of Directors. — an announcement from Americares
Bosek began a three-year term on the board of the the health-focused relief and development organization on July 1. “We are excited to welcome Tim to our Board of Directors,” said Americares President and CEO Christine Squires. “As chairman of Americares Junior Council and a longtime volunteer he is deeply committed to our mission to save lives and improve health for people affected by poverty or disaster.” 
Bosek has served as chairman of Americares Junior Council since 2017, helping to grow the council from 34 members to nearly 100. “My family has been involved with Americares for almost 20 years and I keep a 2002 Americares supporter card in my wallet to this day,” Bosek said. “It has been incredibly rewarding to see the impact the organization has had on so many lives. I’m excited to help Americares continue to grow and I hope the Junior Council can play a greater role in getting younger people more involved.”   
He is currently a vice president in the SPDR ETF division at State Street Global Advisors, the world’s third-largest asset manager. Prior to joining State Street, Mr. Bosek served as an associate director on the exchange traded funds strategy and due diligence team at UBS Wealth Management.

Update, Friday, April 17 — Figure skating legend Dorothy Hamill and two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan are joining the biggest names in figure skating this Friday, April 17, for a livestream benefit event supporting Americares response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Japanese champions Miki Ando, Shizuka Arakawa, Yuka Sato and Fumie Suguri have also joined the roster of skating stars raising funds for Americares COVID-19 relief, along with three-time Olympian Todd Eldredge and World Champion pairs skating team Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner. Americares is delivering more than 1.4 million protective masks for health workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The masks will help to alleviate shortages at hospitals and primary care facilities in 11 states and Puerto Rico. — an announcement from Americares

The city of New York has already received 300,000 masks and the state of Connecticut and Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts have each received 100,000. In Puerto Rico, 40,000 masks will be distributed among 11 of Americares partner health centers on the island. The rest of the masks are headed to California, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Tennessee and Washington where state and city officials will oversee the distribution and allocation of supplies to medical facilities based on need.

Americares is responding to the devastating 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Puerto Rico’s southwest coast on Tuesday, killing at least one person, toppling buildings and causing power outages across the island. — an announcement from Americares

Gov. Wanda Vázquez declared a state of emergency and activated Puerto Rico’s National Guard, cautioning residents to prepare for additional aftershocks. Tuesday’s earthquake follows the 5.8-magnitude quake that hit Puerto Rico early Monday, collapsing homes in Guánica and heavily damaging dozens of buildings. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, hundreds of small earthquakes have hit the island since Dec. 28, including at least 29 over magnitude 4.0.
