Stuff for Kids To Do at Darien Library During School Break, Feb 15 to 21

Haven’t registered the kids for anything this coming February Break week? No problem! Here’s a list of events and things to do at Darien Library for the duration and most don’t need you to register (we note it when you do; some of these are more adult-oriented, but teens might like them):

MONDAY — Feb. 15 — Washington’s Birthday

All day — And Now for the Silliest Way to Celebrate Presidents Day … — “Stop in for a presidential book and snap a photo in our Presidential Photobooth!”

2 to 4 p.m.Monday Minecraft Mania — “Join us as we present challenges to build and collaborate within the Minecraft program. We’ll be logged in to the Children’s Library’s accounts, ready to play! Grades 2-6, open.

TUESDAY — Feb. 16

6 p.m. — Laser Show with Music for Kids on Black History — “Part history lesson and part uplifting musical revival, the Black History Laser Tribute is an unforgettable experience for students of all ages. Grades K and up.”

WEDNESDAY — Feb. 17

1:30 p.m. — ‘Ray’ — Matinee Showing: Black History Film Fest at Darien Library — Rated PG-13; 152 minutes. — “This biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era.”

3 to 5 p.m. — Black History Portraits Art Workshop at Darien Library — “Create portraits of African American luminaries with Miss Lisa during this afternoon program. Ages 8-12.”

THURSDAY — Feb. 18

2 p.m. — ‘The Wiz’ Movie Matinee —All Ages. Rated G. 135 minutes. “Relive all of the magic of this beloved musical.”

6:30 p.m. at The Goose, 972 Post Road — Forever Young Book Group: ‘Dumplin’ — You need to register for this one — Introducing Forever Young, a book group for fans of young adult (YA) fiction who are a little less Y and a lot more A. Join us as we discuss Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’.

FRIDAY — Feb. 19

2 p.m.: Duke Ellington and other stories — Not Rated —  70 minutes — “Celebrate African American History with short stories by award winning author and illustrators. Open.  All Ages.”

4 to 5 p.m. — Open T|E|A Rooms — Board Game Making — “T|E|A Room Tuesdays are held Tuesday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and are open to children in Grades 3 to 6. No registration necessary!”

6 p.m. —Family Digital Scavenger Hunt — You’ll need to register online for thisFamily Program. — “Do you know Darien Library? Families will compete in this touchscreen event that will have them racing through the stacks. The winning team will receive a prize!”

SATURDAY — Feb. 20

2 to 4 p.m. — Lego Building — in the Children’s Library — “Are you a Lego fan? Lets’ build something together! Stop by every other Saturday to participate in collaborative Lego building with other kids. Ages 5 and up.”

2 p.m.Family Concert: From Jazz to Soul — “Darien Library welcomes the extraordinary vocal talents of Rhonda Denét, who, flanked by the Silver Fox Songs Trio, will perform a collection of jazz standards and soul classics that spans five decades.”

SUNDAY — Feb. 21

2:30 p.m. — One-Man Play About a Black Youth: Sunday Afternoon at Darien Library — “An autobiographical play about a black youth who rocks and rolls to his own beat and is forced to battle racism, stereotypes, and ignorance.”
