Frustration during some road construction on the Post Road last week resulted in one driver throwing a drink with ice in it at the side of a vehicle, police said.

With a police officer at the construction scene, it was the wrong place (in the westbound-traffic lanes near Exit 13) and the wrong time (about 10:25 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13) to be doing such a thing, but anytime that day while the cop was there would have been a bad time.

Police gave this account (not proven in court, if it ever gets there) of what they say happened:

The man, a 39-year-old Ledyard resident, was driving an SUV to the left of a 65-year-old New Canaan woman and both were trying to merge into one lane. The man yelled at the woman, saying, “We’re trying to merge!” The woman responded, “So am I!”

At that point, the man threw a drink with ice in it, which hit the side of her car.

She saw a police officer nearby and got his attention. The officer had both vehicles pull into the parking lot of a nearby bank.

The woman said she was very startled by the man’s actions and wanted to press charges.

The man, who had been charged with breach of peace 20 years ago, in 1995, and an arrest on an assault charge in 2009, was issued an infraction ticket charging him with creating a public disturbance.
