A man jogging near the intersection of the Post Road and Salt Box Lane in the Noroton section of Darien was bitten by a dog as he passed the dog and its owner on Saturday, police were told.

Darien police provided this further information about the incident:

The man was jogging on the sidewalk on the Post Road at about 1 p.m. when a female with a dog on a leash approached him from the opposite direction. He told police he believes the dog is a German shepard. The woman was on the phone.

In order to avoid the female and the dog, he left the sidewalk for the roadway, but the dog, police said, “had enough slack on its leash that it was able to lunge at him and bite him on the hamstring (tendons at the back of the leg near the knee).

The female initially didn’t realize that her dog had bitten the man. She apologized, and she and the jogger parted, police said, “without incident.”

The jogger went home and then sought medical attention. After a while, he decided it was a good idea to report the incident, which he did at 6:05 p.m. The Darien police animal control officer was able to find the dog’s owner and is following up, police said on Wednesday. As of Wednesday, no charges were filed against the owner.

Editor’s note: There’s an unfortunate phrase among journalists to the effect that dogs biting men is not news but men biting dogs is news. Well, nonsense. There’s another phrase at least one news organization uses: “As local as local gets.”
