Town Seal Patrol Car

The town seal is part of Darien Police Department's shield-like logo (coat of arms?). Here's a widely seen version from the side of a typical patrol car. Note the central gable (the pointy part in the middle) is not quite missing from the building, but it's got the same color as the roof.

A teenager whose phone was stolen at Dunkin Donuts last Friday was able to track it to “the area of” Dubois Street before the phone was turned off, according to police, who said they intended to check the store’s video record.

The case, reported to police at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, shows two typical tools used when cell phones are reported stolen: the “Find My iPhone” feature now on many of Apple’s iPhones, and video surveillance records from store cameras.

(Both tools also have their limits — video records don’t always capture a good image of a person; as in this case, when a phone is turned off, the finder feature stops workinCe.)

The 16-year-old Darien teenager told police that she was sitting at a table in the downtown Dunkin Donuts at 967 Post Road with a friend at 3:30 p.m. After a few minutes, they left, but she left the cell phone behind on the table.

When she realized she was missing the phone, she returned about 45 minutes later, but it was gone. Her “Find My iPhone” feature showed the phone was in the area of Dubois Street before the phone was turned off.

The girl didn’t suspect anyone in particular at the doughnut shop, and neither did two shop employees, who also said they didn’t remember anyone taking it during that busy part of the day.

A manager was not at the Dunkin Donuts when police were there, but police intended to ask to see the video surveillance record, and the matter remained under investigation.
