Darien police say that on one recent night, a Corvette with the keys inside was stolen outside one home in town. On another night, a Mercedes Benz was stolen the same way. Early on another morning, someone stole a wallet and other items from an SUV.
All three vehicles were left unlocked, outside.
Police, who did not say that any of the thefts were related, gave these accounts of each theft (in chronological order):
The Vette
At about 6:40 a.m., Wednesday, June 23, the owner of a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette was awoken by the sound of the car starting. He looked out a window of his home at 30 Goodwives River Road and saw it pulling out of the driveway.
The next day, Darien police were notified by the police department in Greenbelt City, Maryland (just outside Washington, D.C.) that the vehicle had been found there.
According to Google Maps, it takes about 4 1/2 hours to make that 260-mile trip.
Wallet, IDs, Fishing Pole Stolen
Sometime overnight from Thursday to Friday, June 24 to 25, a 2019 Subaru Outback was entered outside a home on Outlook Drive.
The victim told police that a wallet with cash, various identification cards and bank cards was stolen, along with a fishing pole and a portable speaker.
The Mercedes
Sometime overnight from Saturday to Sunday, June 26 to 27, a 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS was stolen from the driveway of a home on Nickerson Lane.
Using a remote location service, it was determined that the SUV was in Hamden.
Hamden police were told about the location, but they couldn’t find the vehicle.
