Thorne not only had been a member of the Board of Selectmen but a Representative Town Meeting member before that, and a chairman of the Darien Democratic Town Committee.

While a selectman, he was on various town committees, including the Blight Review Board. He was a member of the Darien Mens Association and had participated in that group’s volunteer activities.

His wife, Barbara, who survives him, is a member of the RTM and a former member of the Board of Selectmen.

Stevenson sent a statement to town employees about Marc Thorne’s passing. Here’s the full text:

Dear colleagues,

I write with some very sad news. Our friend and colleague Marc Thorne passed away this morning.  He suffered a severe stroke early Sunday morning.  Marc will be remembered for his kind and thoughtful nature, being the consummate gentleman and his deep commitment to the Town of Darien.  Marc and Barbara have been such an inspiration to us all.

Please keep Marc, Barbara and the Thorne family in your thoughts and prayers.  We will share information about his service when details become available.

I’ve asked that the Town of Darien flag be flown at half-staff in Marc’s memory.

Jayme
