Darien’s superintendent of schools, Alan Addley, announced in an email Thursday morning that he’s resigning his job with the school district. Last year, the Board of Education had extended his contract to June 2027.
Addley began his announcement by saying: “After six years as superintendent of schools, I will be retiring from Darien Public Schools, effective June 30, 2025 or on a mutually agreed upon date.”

He added, “I am committed to assisting the Board [of Education] in the transition to new leadership and leave with great pride in our collective accomplishments.”
Last year, on Aug. 30, the Stamford Advocate reported that “Darien Superintendent of Schools Alan Addley’s contract has been extended through the end of June 2027 with a salary increase for the new school year.”
The superintendent’s statement suggested that his departure is amicable, saying he valued his experience in the Darien school system: “I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have had to work with such dedicated staff, board members, public officials, parents and students. […] I know a wee part of me will always be part of the Blue Wave family, and much like the tree in my favorite children’s book, The Giving Tree — the tree was happy!”
Addley also praised the district: “Darien is an exceptional New England school district, and I look forward to hearing of its continued success.”
Although Addley said, “I look forward to retirement with excitement and anticipation,” the superintendent did not say whether he is retiring from working or may be work elsewhere: “After 41 years in education, including 17 as superintendent, it’s time to spend quality time with family and pursue other endeavors,” he wrote.
The report in the Stamford Advocate also said: “Addley’s annual base salary for the 2024-25 school year is $329,584, up from his previous salary of $319,984. Addley will also receive an additional $15,000 during the year, a portion of which he can arrange to go into a retirement plan.”
Darien superintendents usually have been hired after an acting superintendent has served for at least a school year as a search committee of the Board of Education seeks public preferences and then conducts the hiring process.
