Get your kids creative juices flowing this weekend before the Monday deadline for the kids’ poster contest or the middle school comic book contest for Drop It & Drive in Darien.

Your kid can win a prize in these contests and get a boost to motivate his or her creative art efforts.

“Creative activities” was one of Darien’s lowest scoring assets in a recent town-wide poll of our youth. The Community Fund’s Thriving Youth encourages participation in this fun and meaningful challenge!

Drop It & Drive In Darien Poster Contest for Kids, Kindergarten Through 5th Grade

Drop It & Drive In Darien invites all Darien elementary school students to design a poster that promotes safer driving in our Darien community.

The theme of the 2016 contest is:

“LET’S MAKE DARIEN A SAFER COMMUNITY.

ON THE ROAD = OFF THE PHONE”

  • 1st Place — Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 — $75 cash prize each
  • 2nd Place — Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 — $50 cash prize each
  • 3rd Place — Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 — $25 cash prize each

Eligibility

All current students in grades K-5 (public, private or homeschooled) who are residents of Darien, Connecticut.

Submission Guidelines

Create an original safety/awareness poster that discourages distracted driving, especially cell phone use while driving, in our Darien community. Use the contest message “Let’s Make Darien A Safer Community. / On The Road = Off The Phone” in your entry. Show your creativity while you emphasize why it is dangerous to everyone when drivers don’t pay attention to what they are doing.

Each entry must be an original hand-drawn or electronically-created submission. Entries must be a minimum of 8.5″ x 11″ sized-paper and a maximum of 11″ x 14″ sized-paper in a horizontal/landscape or vertical/portrait layout. Your artwork should appear on one side only. Laminating is not permitted. There is no limitation on the number of colors used.

Poster designs may not incorporate any copyrighted characters (i.e., comic and/or television characters), photographs, and magazine or newspaper illustrations.

Your entry should incorporate the contest theme “Let’s Make Darien A Safer Community. On The Road = Off The Phone.” Entries must be received by the contest deadline of Monday, April 11th, 2016 at 5 p.m. EST. One original design entry per person.

Entries must contain the contest entrant’s full name, home address, email address, telephone number, grade and name of school (or state if homeschooled) on the back of paper-based entries or in the body of emails for electronic entries. Paper-based submissions will be returned only if a SASE is enclosed.

Selection Criteria

A panel of qualified local judges from The Darien Arts Center, Geary Gallery and the Darien High School Art Department will select the winners. Entries will be evaluated and winners selected on the basis of their compelling safety message and creative, original, clear and effective design.

The winning entries will be informed in late April 2016 with an award presentation (date TBD) at The Darien Library. Winners will be given further details about the awards ceremony when they are notified of their winning entry.

The winning entries will be displayed at the Darien Library in May 2016 and may be displayed in local newspapers, local websites and on the Drop It in Darien Facebook page and the Drop It & Drive in Darien website. Drop It & Drive In Darien reserves the right to reproduce your work. You can reuse all your work after the contest.

Middle Schoolers: Create a Comic Book Sample For a Prize in Drop It & Drive Contest

Drop It & Drive In Darien invites all Darien middle school students to design a two-page sample of a comic book to promote safer driving in our Darien community.

Submission Guidelines

Create your own 2-page sample of a comic book that addresses the issue of distracted driving, particularly of cell phone use, in Darien. Submissions should examine why this is not just a safety issue for teen drivers but applies to everyone, including pedestrians. Show some creative ways to illustrate the risks when drivers don’t focus on the road!

Each entry must be an 8.5″ x 11″ (letter-size paper) original design in JPEG or paper-based, landscape/horizontal layout, with black-and-white or color drawings and text/graphics on one side only. Entries must be received by the contest deadline, Monday, April 11, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. EST. One original design entry per person.

Computer generated images are acceptable as long as they are your original work (no clip art). No copyrighted artwork, characters or name brands (for example “iPhone”) are to be used in the entry.
