Find out about the history and present organization of the Darien Police Department in a one-hour presentation by two police detectives Thursday evening, March 22 at the Depot. Detectives Mark Cappelli and James Palmieri will talk about the department from 7 to 8 p.m. They’ll discuss the many teams, bureaus and collaborations within the building at 25 Hecker Ave. “The Darien Police Association strongly and generously supports the Depot and its programs — and always is there to keep an eye on us!” the Depot said in an announcement. “Please bring a friend and join us for an hour.”

The public is invited to an informal workshop/discussion on vapes, e-cigarettes and “Juuls” at the Depot, Darien’s youth center, on Thursday, March 15 as part of the Depot’s “Coffee & Conversations” series. The event takes place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Speaking will be Dennis Bludnicki and Maggie Young, each of whom has worked at Liberation Programs Inc., which is co-sponsoring the discussion. Here’s more about who they are:

Dennis Bludnicki has been with Liberation Programs, Inc. for over 12 years; initially working as a drug counselor at Greenwich Youth Options for seven years. He later was a counselor at Liberation’s Outpatient Clinic in Stamford facilitating early recovery skills to adults dealing with alcohol and other drug addictions through individual , group and family counseling. Currently, Dennis has returned to working with youth and their families in the Greenwich Community and surrounding area, providing prevention, education and drug and alcohol counseling.

Teen Talk: Eating Disorders and How to Help a Friend Who May Have One

Myths about eating disorders and how to help a friend who may have one are the subjects of this month’s “Teen Talk” program on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at The Depot Teen Center. The speaker will be Silver Hill Hospital’s Dr. Sara, Niego, service chief, eating disorders at Silver Hill Hospital. Niego is speaking as part of Depot’s “Teen Talk” program for high school-age students. The event takes place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Depot on Heights Road.

Does your 6th-8th Grader want to get certified by the Red Cross for babysitting? This course is $150 and designed for young people to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care to infants and children in a residential setting. Learn basic child care and basic first aid. Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Space is limited.

TEEN TALK, the Depot’s newest program for teens only, is meeting tonight, Jan. 23) from 7 to 8:15 p.m.
This month’s discussion will be addressing drugs and how to help friends/family that are using; the correlation between opioid use and suicide, and finding resources to help. 
On hand will be Robert DiRoma, Jr. LADC, LMSW from Life solution Center of Darien and Detectives James Palmieri and Mark Cappelli. Teen Talk is open to all Darien High School aged students whether in public, private or home-schooled. Teen Talk will meet one Tuesday every month at the Depot. 
February’s Teen Talk will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Jan. 26; Planned Parenthood of Southern New England will be here discussing Plan B, birth control and resources for teens.

BE AFRAID….be VERY afraid…..! The “Monster Mash” Halloween bash takes place at the Depot Youth Center on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and you’ll have a terrifyingly good time. Prizes at the monstrous event include candy and live eels — errr, live goldfish, that is (scared ya, didn’t we?)! Kids are urged — implored, even — to come in costume. The cost is $10 per family.

Now hanging at the Depot Youth Center, a “Hope and Remembrance” banner with pictures of those who passed away due to drug overdoses. Next to it is a display pledge cards signed by people committed to reaching out to others “who might be struggling” with substance abuse or addiction. The banner includes names and pictures of people from both Darien and New Canaan, the town where it originated. The Depot is encouraging people to come see the banner and add their pledges. The free seminar, presented by Successful Study Skills 4 Students and Collegewise, starts at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2 at the Depot, 25 Heights Road. — This is an announcement from the Darien Depot Youth Center, Successful Study Skills 4 Students and Collegewise. Some experts have said one in four girls between 13 and 21 is experiencing some form of teen dating violence; and one in 10 girls is experiencing physical teen dating violence. — This is an announcement is from Darien Depot Youth Center. Amanda Posila, Training Director from The Center for Family Justice will be at the Depot Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, to bring an invaluable presentation on teen dating violence; the signs, prevention of dating violence and where to get help. This discussion is sponsored by The Depot’s “Girls Night Out” program and the Darien Domestic Abuse Council, and is strictly for high schoolers only.

The Darien Depot, is proud to host a free seminar, “7 Skills All Students Need for a Successful Transition to a New Grade, open to all area parents. In this informative and highly interactive workshop, parents will learn seven evidence-based techniques as to how they can help their student stay focused, complete homework with purpose and crispness, achieve higher confidence, to get better results. This no-cost workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 7 p.m., at The Depot Youth Center 25 Heights Road, Darien, CT 06820. “We are pleased make this free presentation available to our parents, just at the time they are thinking about transitioning their student to the next grade,” says Pam Ha-Stevenson, Board Member. “This workshop will give parents support as to how they can successful transition their student to the next grade — and what to expect.”

The Darien Youth Commission has announced the winners of the Darien Dash, the commission’s first town-wide scavenger hunt: Philip, Natalie, Miranda and Kathryn Roche. The Darien Dash took place on March 11 with 13 teams competing for top prizes. It concluded at The Depot Youth Center, where points were tallied and prizes awarded. The Darien Youth Commission, comprised of both adults and high school students, develops enrichment programs and activities for youth. Kids Can Apply for the Depot/Police Dept Citizens Police Academy

Applications for kids to join the Darien Police Department-Depot Youth Center Citizen Police Academy will be accepted starting Wednesday, Dec. 7. The five-week program is run by the department’s Youth Division Detective Mark Cappelli in conjunction with The Depot Youth Center to give students a better understanding of police officers’ duties, responsibilities and training requirements. Officers from different departments participate, allowing students an opportunity to become acquainted with them in a friendly, interactive environment. Traffic enforcement, accident investigation, criminal justice, Internet safety, forensics, crime scene investigation, and a presentation with S.W.A.T. will be covered.
