Kids Can Apply for the Depot/Police Dept Citizens Police Academy

Applications for kids to join the Darien Police Department-Depot Youth Center Citizen Police Academy will be accepted starting Wednesday, Dec. 7. The five-week program is run by the department’s Youth Division Detective Mark Cappelli in conjunction with The Depot Youth Center to give students a better understanding of police officers’ duties, responsibilities and training requirements. Officers from different departments participate, allowing students an opportunity to become acquainted with them in a friendly, interactive environment. Traffic enforcement, accident investigation, criminal justice, Internet safety, forensics, crime scene investigation, and a presentation with S.W.A.T. will be covered.

Attention movie lovers: Mark your calendars on Wednesday, Nov. 30, the annual “Community-Wide Movie” benefiting the Darien Human Services Holiday gift drive will again take place at the Darien Playhouse. Sponsored by the Darien Youth Commission, the Darien Human Services Department, the Depot’s Helping Hand Club and the movie theater, this year’s film is Disney’s latest release: “MOANA.”
This movie premieres in theaters on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Please consider waiting until Wednesday the 30th to bring the whole family to the movie!!

Depot Car/Pet Wash Now Is TOTALLY Cancelled

On Wednesday the Depot Youth Center announced that its car wash/pet wash has been not just postponed but totally cancelled because the drought is expected to last for some time. You can get a refund if you already bought tickets by bringing them to the Depot — or you could just consider your ticket a contribution to the town’s youth center. The event was originally scheduled for last Sunday, then postponed to Oct. 9. Here’s an announcement posted Wednesday by the Depot on Facebook:

An 18-year-old from DOMUS House in Stamford gave a talk last Monday to warn area health and social services professionals and others about the dangers of vaping, a trend of “smoking” vapor through electronic cigarettes. Monday’s Communities 4 Action annual meeting at UConn Stamford was attended by a wide cross section of health professionals, social services professionals, police and elected officials. Rayon Meikle from DOMUS House in Stamford adamantly warned against vaping in his talk Monday before the group. Rayon showed the crowd examples of vaping devices, which he said are priced from $30 to $600. He said the battery alone costs $30.

Depot Youth Center will host The “Kid Ace” Magic Show, Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m.  This fun event is to benefit The Depot chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). There is everything you expect from a magician and then, there is Kid Ace. In early 2015, the NFL selected Kid Ace as a featured artist in their Super Bowl campaign, beating out many other entertainers who applied for the position. Whether headlining sold out shows in the heart of Times Square or performing for thousands at Ahoy Stadium in the Netherlands, there is no doubt that the future is bright for this rising star in the field of entertainment. His unique blend of illusion, comedy and modern style makes his live show a guaranteed winner for our generation.
