If you need to renew the registration for your car or driver’s license this weekend, you’ll be between a rock and a hard place — although you have just enough room to squeeze through:

The rock: The state’s extensions for late registration expire Oct. 13 (Tuesday)

The hard place: The state will close down Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles “major customer services” offices at 12:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, and not reopen them again until 7:45 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13, after Columbus Day on Monday.

It sounds like Tuesday will be a crowded day at the DMV, and if you need to renew, you may be taking time off from work to do it. This week is probably a better time than Tuesday.

(The DMV had been saying that Oct. 10 was the deadline, but recently said that due to the Columbus Day holiday, the deadline would be Oct. 13. If you see a notice on a DMV Web page mentioning the Oct. 10 deadline, know that that’s no longer the case — looks like 13 is now your lucky number.)

You can go online now to do many registration tasks, and you can go to American Automobile Association offices, which have different closing times than the state to do some tasks, like get a new driver’s license.

Here’s what the DMV has to say about it, from a recent news release:

“If an expired renewal is not completed by next Tuesday, then all the regular penalties will be imposed beginning Oct. 14.

“If the agency is closed on the day of expiration for a license or registration, under state law (Conn. General Statutes 14-22 and 14-41) registrations and licenses remain valid through the next business day that the agency is open, which is Oct. 13, so the renewal can be transacted.  The agency has informed law enforcement officials about the end date for extensions.

“Those needing to renew a license are urged to visit a AAA office, which are located throughout the state. Those doing a registration renewal can go online (ct.gov/dmv/online) using a computer, tablet or smartphone.”

AAA offices are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, but they’ll also be closed on Columbus Day.
These are the AAA offices nearest to Darien (if you work elsewhere, you may find a more convenient location on the list here):

See this Web page to understand which driver’s license renewal services AAA performs and what you need to bring with you. You don’t have to be a member of AAA to use their license renewal services.

The DMV has a “Hub Office” at 540 Main Ave. in Norwalk. It’s open from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, then closes early on Friday with the rest of them.

There are limited DMV services available at its office at 137 Henry St. in the South End of Stamford — by appointment only. It, too, keeps to the DMV’s holiday hours.

Here’s a list of services (with links) that the DMV will now let you take care of online (keep in mind that if you owe taxes on your vehicle to the town, you’ll have to get that paid and get a receipt before you can renew with the state — Darien Town Hall closes at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and reopens at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday):
