When Carlos Artiles was arrested on charges related to theft of mail from Darien mailboxes last January, police filed search warrants to allow them to search through his phone, where they found a video involving child pornography, Darien police said.

Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

Artiles, 37, a resident of Patterson, New Jersey, had received the 30-second video from someone unknown, and he wasn’t involved in creating it.

The video showed what appeared to be a minor involved in a sexual act.

Police sought and received an arrest warrant charging Artiles with first-degree possession of child pornography.

He was already in state custody as a result of his previous arrests.

At a July 30 appearance in state Superior Court in Stamford, Artiles was arrested and arraigned on the charge that day.

His bond was set at $100,000, and he remains in custody.
