With a new Wegmans supermarket under construction on Route 1 in Norwalk, two blocks from the Darien border, the company took another step toward its goal of opening next summer with an announcement that it’s hiring and training workers now.
— a recent announcement (and a previous one) from Wegmans Food Markets Inc.
Wegmans Norwalk will be a 92,000 square-foot supermarket with the space to offer a wide variety of brands, including thousands of organic options and prepared foods. The company says it has “consistent low prices.”
The store is on a site with almost 11 acres across Connecticut Avenue from the recently closed Walmart. In addition to a parking lot, the store will have an underground garage.
The company says it will employ about 500 people in this, its first location in Connecticut. (Interested applicants are invited to apply online at Wegmans.com, or call 203-299-3333 for more information.)
Progressive Grocer, a trade publication, reported this year that a survey of grocery store shoppers, “As for loyalty, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Publix, ALDI and Sam’s Club ranked highest.” Wegmans also ranked highest in “customer experience,” according to the survey by Market Force.
In 2021, Wegmans ranked #1 on People magazine’s “Companies That Care” list. The business, which turned 100 years old in 2016, has been named one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” by Fortune magazine for 27 consecutive years, ranking No. 6 in 2024.
The Wikipedia article on the store says that in 2007 the Food Network called it the “Best Grocery Store,” and Consumer Reports surveys of subscribers from 2006 to 2017 listed it as the top grocery store.
Each year, a Wegman’s announcement said, “the company gives back to the local community through food donations; community event sponsorships [and] well-paying, fulfilling jobs for youth and adults.”
More About Working for Wegmans
Most of the employees at the store will be new to the company and hired locally, the company said.
Interviews are conducted by appointment only and applications are not accepted at the store construction site. Available full-time positions include everything from entry-level management to customer service positions in bakery, produce, overnight grocery and culinary roles such as chefs and line cooks. Hiring for part-time positions will begin at a later date.
“Wegmans offers competitive pay with industry-leading benefits, flexible scheduling, and a friendly, positive workplace,” said Store Manager Emily Reynolds, who started her Wegmans career as a part-time cashier more than 18 years ago. “We bring new employees on board quickly so they can receive in-depth training on the customer service skills and product knowledge that set our people apart.”
Wegmans says it offers “premium” pay on Sundays and holidays and tuition assistance through the company’s employee scholarship program for full- and part-time workers. The company promotes from within and has announced future plans for additional stores in Maryland, New York and North Carolina.
The Norwalk Wegmans is the chain’s first store in Connecticut. Until the Norwalk store opens, the nearest Wegmans is at 106 Corporate Park Drive in White Plains, New York.
