Walter J. Irving, 93, of Kennebunk, died peacefully on July 7, 2016, after a short stay at Reminiscence memory-care facility in Kennebunk, Maine.

Walter Irving, who died at the age of 93 on July 7, lived in Darien from 1952 to 1980.

Born in 1923 in Somerville, Mass., he graduated from Belmont High School in Belmont, Mass., followed by Parks Air College in East St. Louis, Ill. He worked for Northwest Airlines in Seattle until WWII, when he served in the Marine Corps.

He married Dale Schaffer in 1946; they lived in Darien from 1952 to 1980, and in Springfield, Vt., from 1980 to 1986. He pursued a career in business systems and procedures at a variety of corporations.

He retired to Kennebunk, Maine, where he was a volunteer at the Senior Center of Lower Village and kept busy traveling, painting, and woodworking. He was an accomplished cribbage player and a lover of limericks and puns, had a great sense of humor, and above all cherished his family life.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Judith, and her husband, Stephen Reid, of Brookfield, Vt.; son, Bruce, and his wife, Deborah, of Cambridge, Mass.; grandchildren Josey and Calley Hastings as well as Emily and Jane Irving; step-grandchildren Hannah and Nick Reid; and a great-grandson, Angelo Archdeacon.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Edith Irving; and a son, Gerald, age 11.

Following his wishes, there will be no service, and his body was donated to the University of New England.
