The Darien Arts Center recently awarded 28 cash prizes in its first-ever smart phone photo contest, Pic Darien. The contest garnered almost 400 entries in seven categories, with submissions from all ages. Contestants were not required to live in Darien, and photos were submitted online from as far away as California, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Washington D.C., in addition to Connecticut. First place prizes for adults were $100 and the adult honorable mention prizes were $25. First place prizes for students were $50, with the student honorable mention prizes awarding $15.
The Darien Arts Center is holding an Award and Reveal Reception for its first-ever smartphone photo contest, Pic Darien on Friday, April 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The reception is complimentary and open to the public. A slideshow set to music will debut the winning photographs as well as all other photo entries on the DAC Weatherstone Studio’s 184” HD movie screen. Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served. Nationally published professional photographer, Alix Martinez of Darien, judged the contest, a fundraiser, sponsored by Darien Rowayton Bank, Geary Gallery and Adelaide Fine Art. Those wanting to get their 15 minutes of fame, or just some recognition for taking a great photo with their phone, can enter the Darien Arts Center’s smartphone photo contest, Pic Darien, through April 4. The contest is open to all: there is no age limit, and contestants do not need to be a Darien resident to enter. Those entering the contest will get to see their snapshots up on a big screen at two upcoming DAC events. Contestants may enter as a student for $5, or as an adult for $10, in 7 categories: My Darien, Family & Friends, Landscapes/Nature, Travel, Pets, Abstract or Photobomb/Selfie.
Pic Darien, the Darien Art Center’s smartphone photo contest open to all ages, is receiving submissions online at darienarts.org from March 14 through April 4. The photo contest created this year hopes to encompass a broader population of artists, including the growing number of talented photographers posting on social media. Pic Darien will alternate with the DAC’s Annual Art Show and Sale every other year going forward. Nationally published professional photographer, Alix Martinez of Darien, will judge the contest. Martinez, a children’s commercial and fashion photographer, has been featured on NBC and HuffPost for her underwater photography series that has also been published in many magazines and books.
