Home for the Holidays

‘Home for the Holidays’ at Nielsen’s Florist to Benefit Darien EMS-Post 53

There’s something very special in Darien. Darien is home to one of the only programs of its kind in the United States: Darien EMS- Post 53. This nationally recognized organization relies on high school students and adult volunteers/advisors to provide emergency medical services to our town. Some may be nervous at the thought of a teenager responding to an emergency call, but these young adults are different than most! They are state certified EMTs who are trained to a standard of excellence with medical direction provided by Stamford Hospital.

The first-place winner of Nielsen’s Florist’s “Bras for a Cause” bra-decorating contest is Cindy Morabito, with her “Breast Cancer Succ’s” creation, the store announced. The event raised “just over $3,000” which will hep treatment and detection of breast cancer, the store announced. Morabito won a pair of JetBlue tickets. Her win was based on voting conducted by contributors to the Paint the Town Pink program to help people with breast cancer. The second-place winner was Doreen Godfrey, with her “Screw Breast Cancer” bra, selected by First Selectman Jayme Stevenson.

Nielsen Florist’s “Bras for a Cause” event continues to 8 p.m. at the Post Road flower and garden shop, and as of right now, there’s still time to vote on the brassiere you think is made-over best. Wine and hors d’oeuvres are available, as are massages in one corner, amid the plants and bras on display in the store’s atrium. The event — with $10 at-the-door admission and votes for $5 — raises money for  the fight against breast cancer. Specifically, according to an announcement on Nielsen’s website: “[A]ll of the proceeds from this fundraising event go to Paint the Town Pink, a fundraising initiative that supports important work in the treatment of and early detection of Breast Cancer for uninsured/underinsured women.” Here’s what the bras and the rest of the event looks like:
