The Maritime Aquarium is holding a Fall training course for folks interested in volunteering. The class starts Oct. 3. Required informational meetings are Sept. 19 and 26 (attend one). We get volunteers from throughout the area — adults on weekends; retirees on weekdays; and teens looking to accumulate community-service hours for their college applications.

No bird may claim a cultural influence as big and long as the flamingo, and no place in Connecticut is featuring the big pink icons this summer except The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. A small flock, or “flamboyance,” of flamingos will be standing — often, on one leg — in the aviary on the Maritime Aquarium’s riverfront courtyard. They started on Memorial Day weekend and will be there through Labor Day. (That’s May 27 to Sept. 4.) The exhibit is free with Aquarium admission.
For some, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is a place with too many stimuli. So on Saturday, April 1, the aquarium is planning a special morning to give guests with sensory-processing differences a fun, comfortable and accepting environment. During the “Sensory-Friendly Morning,” from 8 a.m. to noon, lights in the aquarium will be lower, and music and other sounds will be turned down or off. The aquarium also will show a specially selected IMAX movie with lower volume and the theater lights less dim. Director of Education Tom Naiman said the aquarium offers occasional “Sensory-Friendly Mornings” to be supportive of children and adults with special needs who may be anxious about visiting.
