The Darien Department of Human Services provides gifts to low-income families and seniors in Darien. Gift cards are especially helpful and needed for the “sometimes hard-to-buy-for” teens and seniors so their families can pick out just the right gift for them. _____________

Holiday Model Railroad Exhibit

Stamford Model Railroad Club Annual Open House — the TWO Saturdays after Thanksgiving!  Watch dozens of highly detailed model  trains and trolley cars run through miles of city, town and scenic countryside on a GIANT 150’ x 51’ operating O-Scale model train layout. 

View scale houses and buildings with amazing attention to detail — inside and out.   Plus the always popular Circus Train!  A holiday tradition celebrating 78 years!  The club is located in the basement of St John’s Episcopal Church — corner of Grove & Elm Streets (the entrance is on Grove Street). Admission: $5/Adults, $4/Children – under 5 Free!  Downtown Stamford, close to Stamford Town Center shopping mall.  Municipal parking nearby.  Hours: 1 to 5pm and 7 to 9pm.  Closed between 5 and 7 p.m.

Darien High School — 12:20 p.m.
Middlesex Middle School — 12:30 p.m.
Hindley, Royle, Tokeneke elementary schools — 1 p.m.
Holmes, Ox Ridge elementary schools — 1:25 p.m.

Grocery store closing times:

Palmer’s Market — 8 p.m.
Trader Joe’s — 9 p.m.
Stop & Shop (both stores) — 10 p.m. (also open Thanksgiving)
Whole Foods Market — 11 p.m.

Pharmacy closing times:

CVS — 10 p.m. (pharmacy closes at 9 p.m.)

Government offices at the local, state and federal level are closed. Darien Post Office is closed. If it’s a business, expect it to be closed, although many pharmacies, supermarkets and stores selling items for Christmas gifts may be open. This Thanksgiving, American roads and airports will be stuffed with an estimated 51 million folks — a 3.3 percent increase over last year and the highest Thanksgiving travel volume since 2005, according to AAA. — This article is a combination of announcements from AAA, AAA Northeast and, at the bottom, from Metro-North. The AAA annual holiday travel survey says that of the overall number hitting the roads and flying skies in time for Granny’s pumpkin pie:

89 percent, or 45.5 million people, expect to drive 50 miles or more. This is a 3.2 percent increase over last year. Another estimated 5 percent, or 3.95 million, will travel by plane, up 5 percent compared to last year; and
1.1 percent or 1.48 million will go by train, boat or some other type of transportation.

In addition to the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which will close early at 12:30 p.m., Friday and not reopen until Tuesday morning, here’s what’s open and what’s closed during Columbus Day weekend in and around Darien:
Friday, Oct. 6
Department of Motor Vehicles — offices will close at 12:30 p.m., remain closed on Saturday and reopen Tuesday at 7:45 a.m.

 
Saturday, Oct. 7
Darien Recycling Center (also known as the Transfer Station and the town Dump) — open regular hours (7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.)

Department of Motor Vehicles — offices will be closed all day Saturday and reopen Tuesday at 7:45 a.m., including the Norwalk office

U.S. Post Offices are open. Monday, Columbus Day
 

OPEN:

Darien Recycling Center (regular hours, 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.)

Almost all larger stores are open; check with small shops. Metro-North will operate a regular weekday schedule.
