The same points made in a rally and news conference for Scott Hapgood at Darien Town Hall on Oct. 28 were made in a letter on Monday from six U.S. senators and a U.S. House member to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo — security for Hapgood in Anguilla and fair and transparent treatment in the judicial process there. Hapgood, a Darien man in his 40s, is charged in April with manslaughter in Anguilla, a small Caribbean island where he was vacationing with his family. The island is part of the territory of the United Kingdom. Hapgood fought with a hotel worker who showed up at his door.

Scott Hapgood, the Darien man accused of manslaughter in Anguilla, spoke Tuesday about the stress he and his family have been going through since the deadly struggle in his hotel room with a man he’s said was trying to rob them. “On April 13th, my family’s life was changed forever,” he said in prepared comments at a news conference in Manhattan. The toll on his family and himself were the focus of nearly all his statements. “Since that day, we have been living a nightmare that has gradually become our reality.” In answer to a question later in the news conference, he said of his daughters, now 14 and 12, who were in the room when his struggle with the hotel employee on April 13 led to the man’s death:

Gavin Scott Hapgood, the 44-year-old Darien man who was charged with manslaughter in Anguilla earlier this month, released a statement through a public relations firm saying that he was “attacked without warning” by the man who died in the confrontation with him. The maintenance worker, identified by law enforcement authorities as Kenny Mitchel, a Dominica native, demanded money and was armed, according to Hapgood’s statement, which was made directly by Kelcey Kintner, a member of the public relations firm Red Banyan and a spokeswoman for the family. Mitchel showed up, in uniform, at the hotel room where Hapgood and his family were staying, saying he was there to fix a broken sink, even though Hapgood never called maintenance, contrary to reports online. The maintenance worker “carried out [a] sudden, violent attack on the family,” according to the statement. A Royal Anguilan Police Force spokesman recently told Associated Press that other members of Hapgood’s family were there when the violence took place.

Police in Anguilla who have charged Darien resident Gavin Scott Hapgood with manslaughter don’t yet have a motive for the killing of Kevin Mitchel in Hapgood’s hotel room on April 13, but they’ve released some additional details about the case, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday. Hapgood’s young daughters were in the hotel room when Mitchel died from “positional asphyxia,” police spokesman Randy Dick told the AP. Tensions have been high in Anguilla since news of the homicide broke last week, with comments on social media “both from Anguillans demanding justice for Mitchel and from foreigners who regularly visit the island, with some saying the general anger directed at tourists frightened them.” The Anguillian newspaper editorialized that residents of the nation, a British territory with less than 15,000 people, should keep calm and let law enforcement authorities do their jobs as a matter of justice.

Gavin Scott Hapgood, 44, of Darien has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 27-year-old hotel worker in the Caribbean nation of Anguilla on Saturday, April 13, according to the Anguillan, a local newspaper. Hapgood, an account manager with UBS Global Asset Management in New York City, according to Connect.Data.com, was arrested, released and then rearrested on Wednesday, April 16, the Royal Anguilla Police Force said. He appeared before a magistrate that day in a local court, where he was initially denied bail, then later granted it after his lawyer appealed to a judge, the newspaper reported. Hapgood is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 22.
