Parents: You can enjoy an evening out while your kids (ages 3 to 10 years old) have fun at the Darien Y from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday. Here are the details, from the YMCA website:

Join us on Friday, December 11th for Kid’s Night Out at the Darien YMCA. Our youth staff will entertain your child while you enjoy a nice evening out. We will have dinner, gym time, arts & crafts, snacks, movie and more. Time: 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Ages: 3 yrs— 10 yrs (must be fully potty trained)

Fees:
Members- $25 1st child, $20 each additional child
Non members-$30 1st child, $25 each additional child

Winter registration for programs at Darien YMCA begins on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Here’s an announcement from the Y:

As Daylight Savings time approaches, the Darien Police are asking that we remind you about Y parking lot safety and common-sense rules of the road. The Y’s drop-off and pick-up circle is for that purpose only.

Standing, parking and/or leaving your car in the circle is NOT permitted. It is also illegal to stand or park in the Fire Lane in front of the building. In order to avoid parking lot gridlock and hazardous traffic congestion, Securitas Security Company is patrolling the parking lot, and is instructed to move all vehicles along. We expect Y members, program participants and all visitors to the Y to respect these rules and follow the directions of the Securitas team. Infractions will be referred to the Darien Police.

The Annual Darien YMCA Community Halloween Party will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. No cost to attend, open to the community (not just members of the YMCA).

The Darien YMCA has posted a video tour of the facility on its website. You can check it out below. The video is about 3 1/2 minutes long. It mentions an interesting bit of information (just before the 3-minute mark): A fifth of Darien’s kindergarten enrollment is made up of kids who attended Holly Pond Preschool at the Darien Y.

Darien Public Schools, Darien Nature Center, Pear Tree Point School and Holly Pond School will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 23, for Yom Kippur, but Darien YMCA has a Vacation Camp day for kids up to 5th Grade (register now). Darien YMCA conducts a Vacation Camp on days that Darien schools are closed. Here’s more information about it from the Darien Y’s Facebook page:

Darien YMCA’s annual maintenance program has shut down pools, gyms and the men’s steam room, but much of it has reopened Monday. Here’s the status of various facilities, according to the Y’s website:

YMCA members have the option of using Y facilities in other towns, some of which have also had maintenance shutdowns. The New Canaan YMCA’s shutdowns were scheduled to end on Sunday. The Westport/Weston Family Y has ongoing shutdowns of various facilities, including the indoor pools, which are closed through Aug.

Darien residents Jake Greene and Liz Morrissey never thought they would spend two weeks living on an Indian reservation in the middle of the rolling prairies of South Dakota, until they joined the Darien YMCA’s partner, the Sioux YMCA, in the Sioux YMCA Initiative this spring. The Sioux YMCA Initiative began 9 years ago as a way to provide day camp-type programming for the children living in various communities on the reservation. For 12 weeks each summer, the Twin Cities YMCA coordinates the Y staff who journey to the reservation and conduct programming. The immersion provides Y staff with an understanding of cultural and socio-economic realities they have little previous experience with. The priority is community development, with focus on the youth.

A six-inch water main has disrupted service in the neighborhood of Darien YMCA, the organization says, and it has announced that overnight repairs will require the Y to close down at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Aquarion Water Co. says the water main is in the vicinity of Seagate Road, which is just to the east of the YMCA. In a 2:07 p.m. announcement, the utility said about 20 customers were affected and repairs were expected to be complete by 5 to 7 p.m.

But the more recent YMCA announcement on Facebook, shortly after 5 p.m., has a much later timeframe. Here’s what the YMCA said:
Due to a water main break in the neighborhood, the water will need to be shut off at 9:30 PM this evening.
