Saturday is the End of Tax Exempt Shopping Week: What’s Exempt & What Isn’t

With the start of school just around the corner,  take advantage of the upcoming “Tax Free Week” which runs through the end of today, Saturday, Aug. 27. This one-week event eliminates Connecticut’s 6.35 percent sales tax on clothing and footwear costing less than $100 per item. Additionally, new and used college textbooks are exempt from the state 6.35 percent sales tax for students who present a valid college ID at the time of purchase. Since sales tax is calculated after the use of any coupons or discounts, if the final price is less than $100, the sale is exempt from taxes.

You Can Still Donate to Help Darien Kids Who Need School Supplies

The Darien Human Services Department can still use back-to-school donations from anyone who can drop off the list of items below at the town Human Services Department on the first floor in Town Hall. Although the announcement lists Aug. 28 as the last day for donations, if you’re running late, you can still drop off something next week — it can be saved for next year’s give-outs to needy kids in town, said Alexandra “Ali” Ramsteck, a case manager at the department. What’s particularly needed, Ramsteck said, are spiral notebooks, red pens, 1.5- or 2-inch three-ring binders and folders. “These are always things that pretty much every kid needs,” Ramsteck said.

CT Tax Free Sales Week Starts Sunday, Runs Through Saturday, Aug 22

Connecticut Tax-Free Week starts on Sunday and means you won’t be paying the state sales tax on most items of clothing priced (or sale priced) at less than $100. The state won’t charge for taxes through the week (ending Saturday, Aug. 22). There are certain rules about tax-free buying that you may want to be aware of (for instance, athletic shoes used only for athletics — think soccer cleats — still have a tax on them). For details, see this Web page on the state Department of Revenue Services website.
