Sally Lord Nightingale of Darien, CT, died at the Stamford Hospital on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 surrounded by her family. She was 88.

She was born on March 2, 1927 in Providence, RI, the daughter of Margaret Aborn Lord and Robert Mendon Lord. Sally grew up in Providence, R.I. and attended the Lincoln School. She later attended Vassar College, graduating in 1949.

She was married to Stephen Edwards Nightingale in Providence on June 25, 1949, and except for a short period in Charleston, W.V. right after their marriage, Darien was her home.

Sally loved the water, sailing with her friends and family all over the world, and was a lifelong member of the Saunderstown Yacht Club in Saunderstown, R.I. and a member of the Noroton Yacht Club in Darien beginning in 1956.

She was also a competitive tennis player. In addition, she volunteered for many years at the Darien Library and was an active member of the Darien Community Association.

Sally is survived by two sons, Stephen and David, and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, her son Peter Edwards Nightingale, and her brother, Robert Mendon Lord of Providence.

A memorial service is planned at St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish at 1864 Post Road in Darien on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016 at 11 a.m. A private burial is planned in Providence, R.I.
