Joan Baker Hutchison, whose special gifts of empathy, sense of fun, and making things beautiful led her to become a nurse, an extraordinary mother, and an accomplished artist, died on Oct. 7 at her home in East Providence, Rhode Island. She was 88. Joan was a longtime resident of New Canaan with her husband, Bill, and their three children, but she lived all over the country. She spent childhood summers in Whitefish, Montana, where her Norwegian-immigrant family was from and where she swam in the lake and played with the summer kids until the town curfew whistle blew in the evening.

Nancy C. Hrusa, a long-time resident of Darien, passed away on Nov. 8, 2024, at Saint Camillus Nursing Home in Stamford. She was 96. She was born in Queens, New York to Anna and Harry Compton. Nancy went to high school at Hunter College High and went on to Smith College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in geology.
John William Potter of Darien died peacefully with his beloved family by his side on Nov. 26 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was 84. A native of Rock Island, Illinois, John was born on July 2, 1940. He was a graduate of Rock Island High School and the University of Arizona.
Two males drove off in a 2024 BMW X5 in a Post Road car wash Monday just before it was supposed to be dried, Darien Police said. Police did not identify the car wash where the incident took place. Darien Car Clinic is at 93 Post Road; Splash Car Wash is at 251 Post Road. Police gave this additional account:
At about 2:46 p.m., an “unknown vehicle” being driven east on the Post Road stopped in front of the BMW and the two males, both wearing ski masks, got out of it and entered the wet car. The males were masked, although they didn’t display any weapons during the incident.
Longtime Darien resident Macdonald Budd passed away peacefully on Oct. 5, 2024. He was 92. Mac was born on Feb. 18, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York to Reginald and Margaret Budd.
A Hollow Tree Ridge Road resident told police on Nov. 8 that several days before, either on Nov. 2 or 3, her SUV had been entered and someone had rifled through items inside it. According to police, the owner said nothing was taken from the vehicle, a 2007 Honda Element.
The Monuments and Ceremonies Commission of the Town of Darien invites you to participate in our annual Veterans Day observation at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11. Rose C. Buch, 86, of Darien passed away peacefully in her home on Oct. 9, surrounded by her family. Born in Stamford on March 14, 1938, Rose was the youngest of four, taking on the nickname of “Babe.” She graduated from Stamford High School and attended the University of Connecticut. A quiet and loving person, Rose was well loved by everyone she met.
Patricia Polhemus, a longtime, 72-year resident of Darien and beloved wife to the late Robert Polhemus, passed away on Oct. 6, 2024. She was 97. Born in Stuart, Florida, Patricia was the daughter of the late Jacob and Alice (Sparks) Aigler. Patricia’s memory will be cherished by her loving children, Richard Polhemus and his wife, Kim, of New Milford, and Barbara Polhemus and her husband, Bill Della Rocco, of Maine; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marianne K. McGovern (née McNulty) on Oct. 18, after an extended illness. Marianne’s family owns the WinePort of Darien and the Rowayton Wine Shop which Marianne and her husband Scott have managed for the past 22 years. She will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, unwavering kindness, and the lasting impact she had on everyone who knew her. Marianne was a dedicated member of the Rowayton community, actively invested in preserving its rich history and culture including her support of the Rowayton Civic Association, Rowayton Elementary School, Rowayton Volunteer Fire Department, and Shakespeare on the Sound.
Rose Irma Gesualdi, of Stamford, and a former longtime resident of Darien, and Boca Raton, Florida, passed away on Oct. 12. She was 83. Rose Irma was born on July 2, 1941, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to Mary (Sis) and Isaac Batten. At age 18, an adventurous Rose traveled to Stamford to visit friends.
