Nancy C. Hrusa, a long-time resident of Darien, passed away on Nov. 8, 2024, at Saint Camillus Nursing Home in Stamford. She was 96.
She was born in Queens, New York to Anna and Harry Compton. Nancy went to high school at Hunter College High and went on to Smith College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in geology.
After completing her education, Nancy went on to work for the United States Department of Atomic Energy. That’s when she met the man of her dreams, John Hrusa. John and Nancy went on to get married on May 30, 1953.
They moved to Darien where John worked as an executive for Ring’s End Inc., and they started a family. Nancy went onto become the proud mother of three boys — William John Hrusa, Thomas Henry Hrusa and John Brooks Hrusa.
Nancy became very active in the community, where she volunteered many hours for many different organizations. She became a member and officer of the Darien Kiwanis Club, where she earned many awards.
Nancy also became a member and officer of the Darien Chapter of the American Red Cross. Nancy was the American Red Cross volunteer of the year, the citizen of the year in Darien, and was also awarded the Civic Award honored by the Darien Old Timers Athletic Association.
She was predeceased by her husband John and her son Tom. Nancy is survived by her sons Bill ofPittsburgh and Brooks of Darien, and her daughter-in-law, Denise Farley of Norwalk. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Chris Hrusa, Cathey Hrusa, Daniel Hrusa, Sarah Hrusa and her great-granddaughter, Mia.
Her wake took place on Nov. 12. Funeral services and internment in Cold Spring, New York are private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Darien Red Cross, 39 Leroy Avenue Darien, CT 06820.
