Priscilla Pope Masselink died on August 12, 2024 at her home in Sorrento, Maine after a 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 67.
Born on Jan. 31, 1957, she was surrounded by her loving family and embraced virtually in the arms of countless friends from her Maine childhood in Bangor and Sorrento, her college years at Duke University, the Connecticut community in Darien/New Canaan, where she raised her family, and her cherished Florida home in Boca Grande.
Priscilla’s lifelong pursuits were to be active and creative, to make a meaningful connection with her friends, to improve the groups she joined (and she joined many), to love deeply and laugh often.
She acted on many stages (from Duke Players to Boca Grande’s Royal Palm Players), danced (everywhere), skied beautifully (from Sugarloaf to Zermatt), hiked (from Acadia to the Alps), golfed (and at Boca Grande’s Coral Creek Club, scored a hole-in-one on No. 6 and earned a club championship), played tennis and pickle, steamed hundreds of lobsters for family and friends, read thousands of novels, painted lovely watercolors and needlepointed her family’s Christmas stockings.
Priscilla loved all children. She co-founded the Brunswick International Film Festival in Connecticut, exploring important themes for children around the world. She co-led acting classes for children at the Island School in Boca Grande. Priscilla enthusiastically supported her own children and their friends in their athletics, always cheering from the stands at baseball, football, swimming and hockey competitions.
Priscilla was predeceased by her mother, Polly. She is survived by her father, Gordon; her sisters, Melissa (Bill) and Mary Catherine (Rick); her sons, Jack, Ben (Sandra) and Parker (Elee); her three beautiful grandchildren (who loved their “Lala”); and her husband, Mark. Priscilla’s spirits were especially boosted during her illness by her niece Elizabeth, with whom she shared a special sparkle.
She received a “green” burial in Sorrento, in keeping with her down-to-earth Maine sensibility. Toasts and cheers will be celebrated in her memory in Sorrento and Boca Grande, in due course.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Priscilla Masselink may be made to:
